Question About Gold Razors

Hi all. Been using a New Standard gold lately & have noticed that it gets funky pretty quick and in a different way than my other razors. I don't know if it's because it is gold, but I see green between the comb tines and in general just a kind of a nasty color on the gold - like it's faded almost, a kind of a funky "sheen" (like tarnish maybe?). I'd noticed this before, to a certain degree, on my NEW as well. I cleaned the heck outta these before I use 'em, but they just get this kinda funky color to 'em after awhile. I'm thinking it's due to the gold plating maybe. Anyone have a similar experience with these old gold razors and/or does someone have any good tips on how to keep these in better condition? :001_huh:

I have an old new that is almost entirely Brass. There is aproduct out there called Marvicide. It is similiar to barbacide but in an aerosol can. If I spray my razor after every couple of shaves and then rinse it, I do not have as much of that problem anymore.

Green is definitely the result of oxygen reacting with the base copper contained in the brass. Gold is gone in those spots, allowing O2 to react. Keeping the area dry and clean is helpful, but you will always be chasing the oxidation.

Good news is that the razor will still perform like a champ, even if it doesn't look the greatest.

Gold does not tarnish . . . it will get dirty, and the protective lacquer coating can discolor. Gentle cleaning and buffing with a soft cloth will generally fix a gold razor.
