Question about canned foam, do you still use it?

JCinPA

The Lather Maestro
I used Williams in a mug for about 20 years with cartridge razors before finding this place. Prior to finding this place I’d use the small travel cans of Gillette Foamy, now I use the small tube of Bigelow Proraso or a La Toja stick.

The bigelow lathers up so quickly, I can’t make a “pressed for time” argument—well not a real one anyway. So why use it?

That said when I did used canned foam decades ago, my favorite was Clubman. Or Foamy. Not the gels for some reason. But it’s been like 30 years since I’ve used canned foam.

I didn't even know there was other canned foam out other than the stuff found at local stores and those were the Colgate, Gillette and Barbasol. Never heard of canned Proraso, Clubman and what ever other fancy foams were until I found this site when I started beginning of 2016 but was never intrigued by them enough to buy them. After I tried I Gillette Foamy Sensitive I went back and tried the other 2 but they were not as good compared to the Sensitive so that was my main foam.

On rare occasions when pressed for time I'll use either my can of Barbasol or Gillette Foamy. When traveling I'll revert back to a Norelco rotary shaver.

I alternate between the Barbasol flavors, but I favor their Pacific Rush variant. I will shake the can, get the right amount into my shave mug, then add a smidgen of warm water before swishing with my shave brush to make a nice lather. It works well for me but I'm not above trying the soaps and such when I get the opportunity.

Since I had been using soaps and creams since 2016 and I finally used the Gillette Foamy in a shave it was decent but it is no where near using a good soap or cream. I started with Van Der Hagen Luxury scented soap back then, it's cheap(not sure what Gillette Foamy or Barbasol cost now) and is way above canned foam I've used. I did like the scent of the Gillette Foamy Sensitive though and it did a good job but I just look at it on the shave shelf and grab any one of my other soaps and creams to lather instead. It was nostalgic to use again but there is not enough desire to try and use it again much less try it a add water and try and make it better. If I am going through the effort with a brush a cream whips up quite fast.

I've gone to Proraso creams in squeeze tubes since going to DE shaving, that being said I was looking for Proraso yellow cream in squeeze tube which I guess doesn't exist so I found Proraso yellow cream in the can. The can is not the same scent as the tube but the scent in the can looked interesting, anyway I should see next week.

...I can take it to the rifle range and use them for target practice.

Though soda is less expensive. 😄😄😄

The only way to find out if it is better for shaving or target fodder is to try it (for shaving) and see what happens.

As I recall, canned foam is a bit dry, compared to gel so if I was going to try it now, I would add some water and use a brush, or...

I still used the can foam for home haircuts, the wife cuts my hair and then uses the barbasol can to shave the back of my neck and shoulders area. I still enjoy the Barbasol scent

Yes when Moon is BLUE, or in a super hurry. Barbosol is name on can, and the can is the LAST can in home. Had over a year, and it works in a rush. Being retired since long ago, I am seldom in a big rush or hurry.

I had tried it and it was actually a pretty good shave just not as good as if I had used a cream or soap. I haven't used it since and no desire to. I forgot how good the scent was. With the amount of soaps and creams I have using canned foam is the furthest thing from my mind. One of the two cans I have will get to the range someday.

Nivea Sensitive Gel isn't all that bad. It lathers well (no brush) and keeps the skin lubricated and hydrated. I've pared it up with every DE razor in my rotation and have had very good results. The scent is pleasing as well. I use it in a pinch when I'm rushed for an uncomplicated, quick shave.

That being said, I prefer a superlather using Proraso white with AOS unscented.

I just went on vacation and I packed light and in a hurry. A DE razor and a can of Gillette Foamy. I haven't used canned stuff in a long time, but it saved room, so I said what the heck.

Well, I'll tell you what, that stuff not only did the job, no cuts nicks or irritation, but it actually smelled great! It smelled so good, even my wife commented on how nice the fragrance was. She said "wow, you don't even need after shave". The fragrance lasted quite awhile too. She rarely comments on my soaps fragrance and I have some good and expensive ones.

So now I'm wondering if I should just go back to the canned cream all the time? I'll save money and smell great at the same time!

I just finished a shave with Gillette Foamy and my 34c. Most of the time I use a brush with tube creme like Nivea, Palmolive, or Proraso. I don't know why I even use a brush and cremes anymore (okay, maybe because I enjoy it lol), since
I get better results using canned foam. I don't know what it is but I can shave daily, multiple passes, and my skin feels great when using Gillette Foamy. I have to be much more careful when using creme and a brush, otherwise I will experience some irritation. Maybe I'm just not good enough and getting the right lather from tubed cremes, but man (for me) the Foamy hits the spot each and every time.

Funny thing is that I was dead set against DE with canned foams until my father visited and left a can of Gillette Foamy behind. Decided to give it a try with my DE razors, and boy am I glad I did. Maybe Gillette is on to something and knows what they're doing! :lol1:

EDIT: I'd add that one of the reasons I was against canned foam when I started DE shaving is that I read that the foams were designed for cartridge razors and not for DE. This, I would later find out, is completely false. I have seen old DE (1954 Super Speed) shaving instructions that Gillette used to supply with their DE razors. Guess what they have a picture of in these instructions? Yep, canned shave foam! I'm pretty sure that in 1954 carts were not even a thing...

Do any of you still used canned foam now and then at home? I can see those that travel using canned foam you can feel free to post but I was more curious about those that may still use it now and then at home.

The reason I ask this question is, I was putting away my scuttle in the cabinet under the sink for the summer and was looking for my shave bowl. Of course there sits two new cans of Gillette Sensitive foam that has been sitting since before January 2016 when I got into this type of shaving. I don't recall ever using it since. It got me thinking if anyone else still uses canned foam now and then. Not really interested in grabbing a can since I get such wonderful shaves with the soaps and creams I have. But the more I think about it the more desire I get to give it a try. I am not sure if it is good anymore though. If it isn't I can take it to the rifle range and use them for target practice.

To top it off I still have a number of twin blade disposables I haven't touched in that long either. I tried giving them to my friend before i got him into DE shaving and he didn't want them, maybe should give those a try also. I just don't think I could do my ATG pass with those though, they might be too rough to do that.
Give it a shot, I'd like to know what you think.

I could go back to my canned foam if I had to. I get the same shave using canned foam versus cream/soaps but the latter is more slick. For performance I do prefer soaps over creams but creams so lather up a little faster. To me the thing canned foam has going for it since I started this adventure is the fact that it is convenient and/or fast, squirt in hand and spread on face. But then again the recent Cello cream in the tube I bought that I thought was meant for a brush is actually a brushless cream and that stuff is slick, just as fast as canned foam. Only thing about that stuff is that it doesn't seem to rinse as good as a lather does.

Before finding DE shaving I did use my Dad's Schick J1 injector all the time with canned foam since I would go a week without shaving as I had gotten tired of the process. I don't know why someone would say not to use a DE with canned foam, it's a razor.
