Question about aftershave splash

I've never used a splash before, up until this point I've only been using witch hazel and balms. But, I'm looking to get a good Bay Rum aftershave splash, I saw one by TOBS the other day that caught my eye. I naturally have dry skin. My question is, are you suppose to use the splash by itself or in addition to a moisturizer?

Either way is a good answer. Some use a splash only, some use a splash and a balm, some use a splash and witch hazel and some use a splash, blam and witch hazel. It can be in a different order. Best way to know, try some.

I often use a balm and a splash, personally. I'd also suggest looking into the bay rums which are already witch hazel based, or contain a good portion of witch hazel. Ogallala's and Captain's Choice come to mind.

I always use WH and then a splash. If I have a lot of irritation after the shave, I'll mix the splash with nivea sensitive skin balm to take the sting away and moisturize my face.

It also depends on the ingredients of the splash in question. I haven't tried the TOBS bay rum, but the other TOBS splashes feel like they have essentially no moisturizing ingredients. Personally I like the way they make my face feel, and I don't need to follow up with a balm, but you might want to do so if you have naturally dry skin.

YMMV depending on your skin, climate you live in, etc. I live in a dry climate and it can be cold, dry and windy much of the year. I usually use some witch hazel then an AS splash and am good to go. If my face seems dry I will either follow with a balm or forego the AS altogether and just use a splash. Some bay rums (and other AS) actually have some glycerine in them so you get some of those good properties built in to the AS. I have added a few frops of glycerine to some of my AS splashes that don't have glycerine already in there. The best advice is just to try things out and see what works for you.

I recently started applying balm and splash at the same time when I use a balm. The splash helps distribute the balm evenly... works out nicely.

Thank you everyone for the helpful responses. Can you guys still smell the splash even with a balm on top?

That would depend on the balm, largely. The Nivea sensitive I use has a mellow scent that rapidly dissipates, and the bay rums I prefer... er... don't. lol So you definitely smell the splash over and beyond the time the balm scent is there.

As others have said, balms are better if you're skin is dry. My skin tends towards the oily side, so balms just make my face feel greasy all day. My normal routine is Thayer's W.H. (with Aloe), and then whatever AS splash I feel like wearing that day. It gets kind of dry here in the winter, so I might use a balm if my face is especially dry.

Shower, shave, towel off, apply GFT Skin Food, and while that soaks in and dries, I brush my teeth, dry and strop the blade, then splash on one of the "burny" aftershaves.

I usually use a splash (got AV ice blue atm) and then apply shea butter after. If you have dry skin, especially if it's irritated certain days as well I'd limit usage of the Splashes. They do fine for a while but if you just a splash daily for a few weeks your skin will probably get irritated. But YMMW. I like to switch it up, this is a Nivea Gel Week, but I'd try Master's Bay rum as it's cheap and I've heard good things about it. Mine should be arriving soon so I'll tell you if anything. It has glycerin in it too.

I'm being a bit long winded but, check the ingredients like others said; if it has glycerin or something like that you should be fine some of the time but probably not all the time (esp winter). The scent thing really depends, my Nivea arctic cool, and Aqua Velva tend to mix to create a cool icy scent but I don't really have exp. with other combos so sorry there.
