What's new

Query re: "NEW" aggression

I had my first shave this morning with a rechromed NEW that I picked up on the BST. I got a good shave with it, but I found it to be very aggressive -- I had to be extremely careful, and I even drew blood (under my nose) for the first time in many months. It seemed to me that the gap was very large between the blade and the comb, much more so than my vintage Merkur open comb, which is a breeze to use. Is this normal for the NEW, that is, is it supposed to be a particularly aggessive shaver, or is something askew?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

EDIT: Here are the pictures:

Can you post a pic of your razor, Neil? I sometimes use a NEW when I have two or three days of beard. I seem to get a closer shave in less time with the NEW, if that is how you define aggressive.

Neil, I've found the New Improved to be more aggressive than the New and the New to be more aggressive than the Old Type. Is it possible to tighten the blade a little more on your New?

My long tooth, ball handled New has a rather large blade gap and shaves quite closely. It requires more attention to technique than some of my other razors. If I'm not careful, my skin gets into that large blade gap.

I'm not certain which type of NEW it is -- perhaps it is an "improved". My habit is to I tighten as much as I reasonably can.

I'll post a picture when I get home, but what I mean by aggression is that it almost feels like I am shaving with an open blade -- nothing "safety" about it.

A NEW has a position bar on the cap with a matching groove in the guard plate. A New Improved has the two positioning pins or pegs on the cap with corresponding holes in the guard plate. The New Improved differs from the Old Type in that the Old Type's cap and guard are both curved surfaced and fit together flush. The New Improved has a flat guard plate.

The gap on a New is about the same as a Slim set on 1. If every thing is right with your razor it could be the angle you are holding the razor or you are going to fast with a razor you are not use to.

I find that I need to do a lot of prep work with most NEW heads before they're fit to replate.
I block both edges of the cap to insure that the edge is square and straight.
I find the NEW to be a rather mild shaver, but it can be some what picky on which blades it likes.
I have no problems shaving my head with a NEW.

Then mine is a NEW -- with the bar in the center -- not an improved.

My NEW has a MUCH bigger gap than that. I will try to post pictures when I get home; hopefully one of you can tell me if it is correct or if, perhaps, the cap doesn't properly match the plate/base(?)

Thanks again.

There's more then 1 style of new cap, some of them have bigger corner nubs.
When I send heads out I nut the cap to it's head, when I get then back they're nutted together but they're all mixed up.
I have to got through all the heads and make sure the caps match the base plates.

I'm curious to see that NEW also. I would qualify the NEW as medium aggression-wise... It might be an angle or something like that as I also need to be careful on my upper lip otherwise I can easily cut myself. However, I did not cut myself for a while now.

I knew I should have stuck with cooncatbob!

Anyway, here are the photos (also added to the original post). Any help will be greatly appreciated:

Neil, I'm not sure, but it looks like the two pieces of the cap don't match. I just looked at a couple of mine, and they show a closer fit in the groove. It may just be a trick of the camera angle, but the blade gap also appears suspect.

Here's a picture of my personnel NEW.

Judging by the pictures of Bob's razor, something is amiss with the razor in the OP. It almost looks like it has too much plating.

+1

It doesn't look like the plate is sitting on the head like it should...

I knew mine was a replate when I bought it, so I'm not questioning that aspect of it. I am only questioning whether this is the correct cap. I'm not so sure it is. Bob's picture was without a blade, so here is mine without a blade for comparison. It still does not look like a proper fit.

Any thoughts?
