What's new

QED Tobacco?

I was prowling around the new QED website and I noticed a QED tobacco shaving soap. Has anybody tried it? What do you think?

Does sound neat but no, I have not tried it. I would give it a whirl just based on the description though.

Just ordered! I've been on a long-suffering search for an Alt-Innsbruck match in soap form. I have high hopes!

Chad, good work. Please let us know how it is - I'm dying to know.

PS- what else did you order?

When did Charles get a new website? It looks nice. What happened to some of his scents? Some, such as vetiver, are gone

 I decided it was high time for me to try the Lemon and Cedarwood, plus Musgo Real AS.

Charles let me know this morning that his Tobacco scent is not straight Tobacco, but rather a blend he devised to create his own unique take on the scent. He's done the same thing to great success (IMHO) with the rose he used in the sandalwood rose soap and, of course, his Special 218 and B&B scents. I'll be sure to give folks an update when it arrives.

I missed the announcement, too! Man, jokes about his website and how it's functionality was inversely proportional to his world-class service are now a thing of the past...

You have my attention now! Definitely look forward to a report on what it is like.

I can't wait to hear what you think about it. I would really like something to go with Alt Innsbruck and Tabarome.

I was just so happy to see QED's new site finally get published. It totally rocks compared to what was there earlier and I'm surprised a bigger deal wasn't made of it by Charles or the QED aficionados who have been dissing the site all these years.

I was saddened to see Badger and Blade soap not on the list any more but a Tobacco scent looks kinda interesting........

It's here.

And it's quite nice, IMHO.

To begin, I've tried other tobacco shave soap scents, namely MB's Indian Tobacco (an FO, not bad, but too synthetic overall, with a sweet background), MB's Aromatic Pipe Tobacco (another FO, sickeningly sweet to my nose -- more cherry and honey than tobacco, really), and TGQ's Cavendish Black (FO, maybe some EOs thrown in, a nice approximation of pipe tobacco). The reason I've tried each of these has been in the hopes of finding a good match for my beloved Alt Innsbruck AS, which reminds me of time spent in Kentucky tobacco barns growing up.

The blend Charles has created for his "Tobacco" soap is far, far unlike any of the soaps above. There's no trace of sweetness anywhere in this soap, but rather a dark, earthy smokiness reminiscent of a leather-filled, mahogany-paneled cigar bar. (I recalled the world-renowned bar at the Seelbach Hotel in Louisville the moment I first smelled this soap -- funny how scents can trigger memories.) By "smokiness" here I don't mean cigarette smoke, but rather something much less sharp -- think "burning leaves in autumn."

It's not Alt Innsbruck, nor is it trying to be, but smelling Alt alongside the lather from this soap immediately allows you to note the common bond between the two in a way that isn't possible with the soaps above (Charles only uses EOs). Think of Alt plus leather and vetiver, with those burning autumn leaves thrown in (at least that's what I get, but I'm by no means an expert at describing scents). So, while it's not a perfect match, Alt is a wonderful layer to add to this soap (the soap actually helps one appreciate the green nature of Alt). One blends beautifully into the next.

In sum, this tobacco soap possesses a masculine scent in a dignified but in-your-face sort of way, and for that reason I wager it won't be loved by one and all in the same way that, say, Charles' lime merits universal applause. For those who appreciate dark, smoky, earthy scents, however, this will likely be seen as one of his best creations. The lather is identical to all of the QED offerings -- easy to create and nicely protective. I'll be turning to this one often, particularly over the winter months.
