QED Savile Row - Pure & Best Badger - Experiences & Opinions

QED Savile Row - Pure & Best Badger

For several years I've enjoyed QED's Savile Row SR3122 in Silvertip. Although it is a 22mm, the vernier calipers measure a thicker knot at handle's top.

  • I have a Medium Best from Edwin Jagger and a Super from Vulfix (660S), both of which are fan shaped.
  • I want to have a spectrum of three brushes to cater for various beard-bristle length. ie Pure for longer whisker, Best for couple days growth, SilverTip (owned) for single day growth shaves.
  • I'm keen to learn from anyone on QED's Savile Row PURE and SUPER badger hair brushes.
  • I've scoured the internet and shaving forums for info, but have found nothing yet.

So thank you to any QED Savile Row Pure and/or Best owners. It would be nice too if they also had the silvertip, or experience with my Edwin Jagger and Vulfix, as I'm considering the QED Pure & Best to replace them.

cheers

Craig, I don't have time to do a search myself just now, but know that there are a number of comments on Savile Row brushes in this section of B&B. I know because I have looked them up in the past. Do a search in this section using "Savile" as the search criteria.

Hi John, thanks for the time to respond. I've done many searches over the years (and more recently). There are many reviews & comparisons on QED's Savile Row SilverTip brushes but really nothing on the Pure and Best brushes, other than a for sale some years back. I'm sure with the population of B&B there are some owners :thumbup1:

The Savile Row 3824 is a really interesting brush. I purchased it early in my Brush adventures, and immediately cast it aside in favor of denser brushes like Chubbies/2Xls. However, after coming back to it after some time I found the brush to be very enjoyable. Due to the super bulb shape, it feels denser on the face than one would normally expect - very similar to a duke 3 that I had, but the tips are incredibly soft. It works well with soaps and creams, but I've gradually migrated to creams as they're easier to use with my super-dense brushes. In the end - it's a keeper. I love how light the handle is and how excellent it performs with its generous flow through and how easily it creates and holds lather.

Sorry, but I haven't gotten a chance to try any other Savile Rows, Vulfix, or EJs.

Craig, interesting question.

I've read many posts about QED silvertip brushes over the years, but can't recall one about the other grades of badger hair with QED's knots. There has been a fair amount of speculation over the years that QED brushes are manufactured by Shavemac, but I don't recall reading any posts about Shavemac pure badger brushes either. (although there is plenty are a fair number of posts about Shavemac Finest brushes).

IIRC, the only pure badger brushes that I've read about on B&B other than the entry level Tweezerman/Escali brushes are Simpson Beauforts and Duke's - which get high marks for face lathering and Simpson.

I'll be interesting to see if there are Saville Row pure brush owners out there, who will respond.

P.S. After rereading your post, I noticed that you also asked about Saville Row, "Super" grade. Saville Row uses the term "Super" in it's excellent article about badger hair grades, but offers only three grades of badger brushes, "Pure", "Best" and "Silvertip".

Good Luck in your quest!

yellafella321: thanks for the response. The Silvertipped SR3824 has proven to be the typed, reviewed and compared QED Savile Row brush. I'm sure it's as great as my SR3122, which I find as you have with your SR3824.

Fwiw I'm 100% Face Latherer with soaps & creams.

redrako: nice post. I may look at see what a beaufort and duke is aboutm maybe their shape is 'better suited' to face lathering than a bulb. Yes, I also noted comments about QED being made by Shavemac. Urban myth...who knows? You highlighted in your post-script something I overlooked. Indeed that excellent article did mentnion "Super", yet Charles at QED offers Savile Row brushes in "Pure, Best, Silvertip".

I do wonder still about their Pure & Best.

I have about.a dozen reasonably high-end brushes, and I find myself only using my SR 3824 Silvertip. For me, it is in the "Goldilocks" zone in softness and stiffness. And it's an incredible bargain, to boot.

still wondering if anyone has a Pure or Best Savile Row. Lots of looks, but nothing on these two QED badgers. thanks for the help

The Savile Row 3X24 was the subject of an edition of our Brush Chronicles a while back. You can read about it here.

I am a fan of QED and purchased my first QED brush from Charles about 7 years ago. It is similar to the 1422 but has a 24mm pure knot. Seems like it was called a QED Select Pure at that time. It is the only pure badger brush I have kept over the years and it remains in my rotation to this day. I use it primary with soaps and shave sticks to face lather and find it to have the best balance of prickly and soft I wanted in a pure brush. It bloomed a little larger than my SR3124 silvertip and has great water retention. I had shoulder surgery about 3 weeks ago and am reduced to shaving with my off hand at the moment. My QED Select Pure has been my go to brush for face lathering till I get better range of motion in my shoulder and dominant hand.

I know of no better vendor for specifying the manufacture of a line of brushes. The commitment to quality that Charles brings to all his products is what continues to bring me back to QED. YMMV but I am comfortable in recommending Savile Row brushes in all grades.
