This may be a stupid or odd question but what was the original purpose of the barbers notch?? Does it have a purpose or any rhyme for this reason so to speak?

It was designed to create arguments on shaving forums in the future.
I believe it's a finger notch which is useful for shaving someone else, but not really yourself. I'm certain I heard that somewhere and didn't make it up but I don't have a source for you...
It made it easier for a barber to open a straight razor 1 handed.
I have a really hard time believing it is for a finger to shave anyone.
I believe it is mostly cosmetic and perhaps a method to reduce weight on that end.

Very interesting opinions , it always drove me crazy wondering why.
Not sure about one-handed, but I also read it was to make it easier to open.
I thought it was to clear the nostril when shaving under the nose.

The reason has been lost to time. We can speculate as to what we think it's for but unless someone finds an old document describing it's use it'll just be open to guess after guess.
I've got no idea regarding its intended use, but personally I find that it is rather practical to use as a good hold while shaving against the grain on the upper lip and the chin.
