Hey everyone. I am new to traditional shaving and have been learning about brushed and such. I found a 100% Pure Badger brush on eBay shipped for $10. I will post to let you know how it works out, but I figure for $10 if it is decent at lathering, it was a steal.
If it's a Chinese brush, you might be shocked to find out it's really quite decent.
I have a DeLong that I got on Ebay for free (that's a whole 'nother story) but it has been a fine brush. The asking price was well under twenty bucks, IIRC.
I have one. Had it for a few momths. It is avery good brush. It's soft, holds a lot of lather (4+ Passes) and has lost very few hairs. This is the pure badger. I also have the $13 dollar silvertip. Its ever bigger when it blossoms. I'm very impressed.
Any information on the loft of these, handle materials - and/or who is selling them?
Looking for a decent travel face-lathering brush.... Even if the badger isn't that great, if the handle's decent it could be refurbished with a new knot.
All I have handy right now are a tape measure and a conversion chart. The pure has a 3/4" or 19-20mm knot, 2" or 50.8mm handle and a 2 1/4" or a 50.8mm loft. The silvertip is the same except the loft is 2 1/2" or 63.5mm. The handle is made of possibly plastic or that other stuff that I can't think of the name of. These are my measurements and calculations. If anything is wrong. NOT MY FAULT!
I've heard that from people before but I have two and no problems. Very few hairs fell out. What did looked like little clippings that were in there loose.
For those of you that have gotten one, either good or bad, what color handle was it? I see a wooden one and a black one. Just wondering which one was worth the risk.
Well, I finally got my brush in, and can I tell you that it took way too long. Well, my first impression was, meh ... I soaked it to get the smell out and a few bristles fell out but I was not alarmed. Once I started latherhing with it, WOW, it was great, and it is so soft and very nice. It is also pretty in bloom too. All I can say is that for all you newbies out there, save the money on initially getting into wet shaving for the razor and blades and balm, not the brush. This $10 baby is amazing.
Yeah, I have a Chinese Badger, I got on Ebay, I've had it for 3 years now and its a great brush, lathers great and does not shed. So I'd recommend them.
It is my understanding that the badger for all manufactured brushes comes from China so there is no reason why the Chinese should not be able to make a really good brush. I am going to try one out. Thanks for the heads up.
I got the $9.99 one with the plastic handle not wood. Mine does shed a hair or two every so often but it is still great. Don't be afraid of the $2.99 one though. If it is good not a bad price, if not not much wasted money.
I bought a cheap badger brush from a local store that was just awful. It had a tremendously heavy, shiny chrome, metal handle and was awkward to use because of it but it was the only badger brush I could find locally. It started to shed after 6 weeks or so and after another week or two, all the bristles simply pulled away in clumps.
Went back to the same store and found they now had the same brush with a black plastic handle for even less, just R99.95 (about $13.50) as I recall. I've been using it several times a week for at least 6 to 8 months and it hasn't as much as shed a hair.
These brushes were not boxed and have no identifying marks so I have no idea what their origins are.
The Delong Badger I have is holding up well to months of use.
It looks like the consensus is that it's a lot of brush for the money. Has anyone gotten a clunker - cracked handle, sheds badly, etc. - and have they tried to resolve it through the vendor they dealt with?
