Public Service Announcement, Check To Make Sure The Hone Or Stone Matches The Box

"Look what I found"
I remember years ago, a member, @David I think, not sure, but they scored a Coticule that was wrongfully placed in a Carborundum Sic box. Since then, I have been checking boxes that I normally wouldn’t have gave a second look at. Over the years, I have opened a lot of boxes and got a lot of dirty fingers, and have not scored a thing——-until today. Imagine my surprise when I opened a box for a Carborundum Razor Hone and out popped a Norton Razor Hone. At least they got the box for a Razor Hone part right. Needless to say I gobbled it up and scurried away singing my happy song.

Take the time and check the boxes. Never know what you might find when you are surrounded by assassins

That was me with the Carborundum box, it was a fantastic little coticule but it was only 2x4.
That there sir is a fantastic score.

Like this suspected 7.5x1.5” unlabeled Escher that went for a song. Unfortunately not to me.

Sold as a Carborundum in original box. Looks sus as the stone does fit the box.

Ask me about shaving naked!
Not a hone, but I bought a 5/8 ‘Westerland’ razor on eBay with a good bit of rust for $32. What it was was Heljestrand MK 31 in tortoise scales. The blade was too far gone but a MK 32 sits in those scales now. I’d grab a few more of those if I saw them.

It pays to look closely, but it doesn’t pay off very often as noted.

Nice, like you, I would have jumped all over that

Forgot to mention it was in the wrong box. A pike krystolo box.
I was bidding on that too! didnt want to go too high since I wasnt sure about the crazing but knew it was worth more, glad you picked it up atleast. I have 2 barber hones in que to test out anyways; a perfect lakeside and winner hone.

I havent tested it yet, but it looks pretty clean other than the crazing, and the crazing doesn't seem to be bad enough to be damaging. In my experience (Maybe 15-20 of them?) 00's are a pretty good (but not great) shaving edge. Behind Panamas and a few others and certainly not worth the 200-300$ they can go for. Their main value is that they are stupidly fast, so even a really poor honer can usually get a decent edge off one as long as they have a bevel set. I mostly just buy them to resell (presumably) to Australian Axe men. They a less valuable, more common, (and better shaving) version of the Nortons in my book. Only buy to resell, because they are worth way more to other collectors than to us. I've actually found that a couple of the similar AMhoneco's are superior for razors. Best I've found so far was called "American Buddy" if I remember right. The coarse side was almost as fine as a 00 fine side and the fine side was actually a pretty decent shave (but still behind Panama and most decent nats).

I'm here hoping someone on B&B got that (probable) green 8x1.75" and DB 6x1.25" Thuri in that lot that went the day before for $61 (I totally forgot to bid).
