Protein Shake vs. Meal

I live about 5 min from the Y so after i've finished with weights i usually just change my shirt, jump in the car, and head home. While i'm driving home i'm usually drinking my protein shake, unless it was leg day then i'm usually drinking it in the locker room until the feeling returns to my legs. When i get home i usually have a chicken breast and either broccoli or asparagus and maybe a cup of long grain rice. My question is this. It seems like alot of calories in such a short period of time with the shake & meal. Would you forget the shake and just eat the meal, vice versa, or what? I guess you could say i'm trying to maintain the bulk that i have but lose the fat so i don't need a bunch of calories to bulk up or anything. Your thoughts??

Yea i read all the monthly fitness pubs like M&F, Men's Fitness and the more fashion oriented Men's Health because it pretty much sucks as far as fitness advice. But your totally right about how everybody has different goals. I've just never seen any kind of discussing about the timing of shake vs meals but like you said i guess it depends on your goals. Thanks.

Nutrient timing has been proved to be a myth by Alan Aragon, Lyle MacDonald and Layne Norton (to name a few). If you like the assurance of it, grab an amino acid drink (Xtend, etc...) and then have your meal when you get home. The shake imo is unnecessary as all you're trying to obtain is the 5g leucine to stimulate mTOR pathways.

The 'ol furnace needs fuel to run is about as basic as it gets. Your body needs the fuel...in my case I've spent a bit too much time fuelling up...but I'm protecting my wicked 6 pack abs with a protective layer of fat!

Seriously though if you're seeing good muscle gains, your physique is coming around to where you want and you feel good don't overthink it.

Thanks for bringing that up because i forgot to add that i drink Scivation's Xtend while i workout. So it looks like no more shake for me. Thanks gus for the help.

Amen. I'd rather stuff my face with 10oz of steak, 2 cups of brown rice, 1/2 avocado and some green onions post workout than a shake. Same goes for a pre workout meal. Spend your money on food rather than expensive protien powder.
