Proraso Green: the evil burn!

This morning I have tried again (for the fifth or sixth time?) to like Proraso Green cream. It seems to be the ultimate shaving cream for many here, and I must admit that the scent is a great way to wake up indeed.

But again, my face is on fire already for the whole day. I think I should give up ... I don't know what the evil ingredient is in this cream (the eucalyptus?), but it is doing really bad things to my face :mad3:

Am I the only one who reacts so badly to this cream? I can't remember being really allergic or sensitive for regular substances, so why should my skin react so violently to Proraso Green? Or are there more B&B'ers who get harsh effects from this cream?

Mind you, I like the scent, and the lather ... but my face feels irritated and flushed for the rest of the day, and it's just not worth it.

Decision: I am going to PIF the stuff (NL only).

bummer! I had that problem with TOBS sandalwood cream a couple of times. it sounds like you've really taken one for the team as far as proraso is concerned. it probably is the eucalyptus, but the only way to tell is to experiment on yourself. have you had a problem with other soaps or creams containing menthol, like qcs vostok (no eucalyptus if I remember right)? if you were a mad scientist you could rub some vicks vaporub on your face and see if the same thing happens. if you're a relatively normal person (like I sometimes wish I was) you can just chalk it up to experience and enjoy your shaves.

Give Proraso Blue a try. Great lather and great protection for your shave with a clean and mild scent with no burn at all.

I'll try another menthol cream indeed, something without eucalyptus. In the meantime, I put the Proraso Green up for grabs on the Dutch shaving forum.

I've had no issues with it, or any other Proraso product. I know some people have bad reactions to the Red line though. If you want a real kick try Queen Charlotte Vostok.

I had a similar, although somewhat less intense reaction. The Proraso Green irritated mainly my neck after shaving. I admit to liking the scent, but I couldn't live with the irritation. I went with Proraso Red and absolutely loved it. I have the Blue also but the scent is just "meh" to me. In Proraso, it's the Red for me.

I have no issues with this cream what so ever, but regardless. If I was suffering from the symptoms that you are, no matter what reputation this cream had, I would certainly cease my usage of the product immediately.

That's why we always see YMMV after every single piece of advice given here at B&B.

Maybe try Taylor of Old Bond Street's products, very nice smell, great lather, great slickness and has no eucalyptus or menthol in there (well the ones I have don't have any of those ingredients in them, anyways).

Good luck.

Most of the "eau naturale" stuff irritates my face the worst, but Proraso makes my skin feel great. Who knows what ingredient doesn't agree with your skin. You may never figure it out. You'll just have to try something else.

I've had a cream and a handful of fragrant soaps do the same thing. I'm not brave enough to try more than twice.

Get yourself some Ultimate Comfort: a spectacular cream in a big tub that requires less product per shave. You won't be sorry.

I can't use Proraso Green either. I think it's the eucalyptus that makes my face break out. I can use other menthol products with no problems though.
