New is a great lather< a lot of people think the quality is down but I really like the new green and not to get off topic but the new red is my favorite cream available.

I have a tube of the new stuff but haven't tried it yet. Not one thing about the old formula I would change but they never asked me. Because if they had, there would not be a new formulation AND the new Red would be the old Red.

I chose the New, and it is a good soap. I had more trouble deciding between the green and the white. I actually had a poll to see how others felt about the two varieties.

I prefer the new formula, for the record all I use is the croap/tub version since I'm not a big fan of creams and tubes.

There is a difference, however and for me personally the differences are:

  • Menthol/Coldness - The old wins here, but not by much..I'd say it's about 20% colder than the new.
  • Scent - This is a tossup for me, they smell identical to my nose.
  • Consistency and Cushion - I prefer the new, once lathered the old is thicker and more paste like, requires more water to get where I want it and gunks up my razor and brush a bit more but it does provide slightly more cushion.
  • Slickness - I can't tell much difference here, the old might be slightly slicker but not enough to matter much to me.
  • Additives/Parabens/SLS - Obviously the new forumula wins here, I've never been very concerned with parabens but SLS does makes my skin dry and itchy.
  • Final shave quality - The new wins by miles here, I got good shaves with the old but it left my face fairly dry and itchy, maybe due to the additives. The new moisturizes my face much better and I never really need a post shave moisturizer. Also my shaves seem to be slightly smoother overall with the new.

I still own 2 tubs of the original green formula and I will use them after I use up my tub of the new formula. Once I use them up I will happily go back to the new stuff, but that won't be for a couple of years most likely...1 tub seems to last me about a year.

New. Better lather, better slickness, better shave. The only thing I'll miss of the old is the strong "menthol kick" that the new does not have anymore.

Probably should have specified performance... Since I've only seen 2 or 3 complaints about the new performance (most seem to think it better), but a number of people have said they don't like it anymore solely because it isn't the Mentholiest shave now.

Old, as a matter of fact pretty much everything of the old line, balm, aftershave and pre/post is much better than the new!

The new line is just a watered down version of the old and nothing like the old in quality!

It has nothing to do with just the menthol content or sls/parabens!

I have one more tub of the old to go through before I order some of the new Proraso. I know that the new does not have as much of the menthol in it , but is there any menthol in it at all or did they completely remove it ?

The never removed it but I found it fain't when putting nose to tub and strange enough no menthol coolness after the shave. While face lathering it gives of a weird smell that doesn't compare to the old, the old had more depth to the scent.

For scent go with the old, for all other areas go with the new. To get the good old menthol kick you can use the pre-shave which hasn't changed.

New. If you miss the menthol kick apply Raso pre/post for every pass - regardless of which soap I use I ALWAYS apply pre/post on all passes. It's my good luck charm for shaves. Works great with Cella too...

i picked up a few tubs of the OLD green (and 1 white) over the past couple of days just to be safe. the new formula will be easy to find in a few months, the old formula not so much.

seems like the jury is still out on which is better, old or new.

i'm really sorry to hear my friend Kenno is in the duldrums w/the new formula...when I heard the old soap had been discontinued I ordered four jars from Connaught to see me through. Well, for a while anyways=:), then curiosity got the best of me so I bought a tub of the new soap and a jar of the new pre shave cream

Funny, how another fellow here mentioned the old formula felt drier to him, and that he needed to use more water when using the old version....I found just the opposite, that the new formula soap requires more water useage, to get the same lather. Well...you know what they say about opinions and noses=:)

the fact of the matter is, the old Proraso is no longer, and eventually the stock some of us bought to see us through, will run out some day...that leaves us with using the new formula. I'll continue to buy it

I liked the old formula, but I find the new soap formula still has a fairly good & hard menthol kick for me, and the new pre shave is working well for me too... I'm using the new pre shave Proraso in front of any soap I lather with, under the barber towel...and I still have close to 300 ml's of the old pre shave cream left. What can I say?, the new pre shave cream works for me

The old Proraso was truly good stuff, I think the closeness in this 'race' proves that. But still, it does surprise me that the new is not running away with this. I have some Santa Maria Novella and the new Proraso and have been comparing them and I cannot find a reason to purchase the SMN again. It's very, very good stuff, and I am not suggesting one cannot find diffferences, many do ... but for me I really can't tell them apart. That was not the case with the old Proraso. SMN beat that handily, IMO.

Anyway, as one poster said, the old is gone! If you don't have a stockpile, I suggest you get some liquid menthol and add a drop to your shaves. My suspicion is that if the new had the same menthol kick (I like it just the way it is, I think the new is near perfect) this race would not be so close. Just a hunch. But if you still like Proraso, as Emeril Legasse says ... kick it up a notch with a little menthol. BAM! It will probably make the transition easier for you old Proraso lovers.
