"Professional" Barber hacked me up! What should I do?

Went to try and get my first straight razor shave today and boy am I regretting it. After doing some research I found a local barbershop which advertised that they did straight razor shaves, I even called to confirm.
I went in, told the barber what I wanted (mind you they had a sign stating they did shaves) and sent him scrambling. Comes back with warm towels and starts applying them to my face, I figure all is good, and I am trying to not breath in his heavily cigarette covered hands.

He then grabs a shavette style razor for the tank with combs and some shaving cream from the machine, lights coats my face, which I knew I was probably going to be in for trouble, then rakes my face with not only 1 but two different shavettes, see hes not satisfied and changes the blades. The whole time I am in pain, making faces and saying how much razor burn I know I am going to get. He keeps going over the same areas without shaving cream, and keeps saying how coarse my beard is...BS!

Finally he finishes his half *** job and puts the most dilute pinaud on my face then wipes it off with the towels used earlier. He leaves me with my first weaper and tries to deny it. I said this was BS and I am not paying for it, in which he of course tells me I have to, I said look I am barely shaves (I really didn't even look the least bit shaven) demanded his license to which he finally pointed to it on the wall after refusing to show me, and I grabbed his name and left.

Now what would you do? Other than never going back. I was thinking of filing a report with the state since he has a license from them, not sure how far this would go. I do not even care to get him in trouble but want him to stop advertising he does shaves, I mean I am dying right now, and I can only imagine how bad my face will get in time.

Also after the shave I came home gave it a good wash, splash with WH and threw on some RazoRock 888 which should help razor burn. Any other good remedies, I prob wont be able to shave for 3+ days after this hack.

After looking up his License I have seen he has had 2 suspensions and 1 fine, latest being 2 yrs ago...Which I saw this earlier!

Tough call, I feel like you are well within your rights to express your disgust and not pay for your shave. It would have been better IMO do so earlier in the shave. If I know someone is doing a hack job on me, the shave stops there, instantly. I'm not going to suffer through something for the sake of doing it. It probably would have been easier for the barber to understand your point had you stopped mid shave.

I'm not sure what filing a complaint will do, I've never done that. If this particular barber has had many complaints, something should be done.

EDIT: as per your next post. definitely file a complaint. I don't know if you will be the one to get his license revoked, but it can't hurt.

TBH I rarely hear good stories from those who have gone in for a 'traditional shave' from a barber. I sometimes wonder if it's worth all the effort, when you can do it yourself and know what the result will be.

Depending on your state complaints are handled differently, but I would start there. In Texas, most, if not all, regulated businesses must have posted not only their license number and name, but also the name, address, phone number and email address, if applicable, for the regulatory board.

Sorry to hear that. As I mentioned in a previous post, I had a similar hack job at the AOS store on Madison. $55 down the drain, lesson learned. Never again. Now I spend the money on creams and soaps and do it all myself. It's unfortunate to go through an experience like that.

Now what would you do?

I would suck it up and never go back. I hope your tip reflected your feelings as well. Honestly Barber shop shaves (in the US at least) is a lost art. The good ones are far and few in between (and probably frequent here). Due to sanitary reasons barbers cant use brushes or straights anymore. I have even seen barbers pull out a Mach3 for touch ups. IMO modern day barber shaves are to "wow" cart users. I can get a better shave with quality products at the comfort of my own home.

as always, ymmv.

Many members here have read enough horror stories to know to stay away from the barbershops unless there is a very strong and clear referral from someone they trust.

IMO true barber shaves are like hens teeth and a dying art. I have not had a barber shop SHAVE since 1991 and my barber at the time passed away by 1995.

I would leave a comment on yelp (or whatever other places have reviewed your barber shop) so others would hopefully learn from your experience

What do you really think they will do? They don't care he can't shave. You are just one opinion. To the state he is a licensed professional.

IDK what they will do, kinda why I was asking what people thought I should do. I will probably file a complaint. The Board SHOULD CARE. If shaving is something taught and an expectation of their job they should know how to do it properly. That is like a Lic plumber or electrician only knowing some of their job/lic requirements. Especially since his signs CLEARLY read that they offered shaves. Seeing as he has had 3 previous offenses against his license it is probably worth IMO.

Just because it is a "dying skill" does not mean that ones offered should be crap!

I obviously won't be going back.

I'd sit on it for 24 hours before settling on a course of action. My initial reaction would be to nuke him, his license, and pay a bunch of hobos to sit outside his shop and shout out his horrible shaving deeds. By tomorrow I'd probably calm down and just leave an honest review on Yelp.

I had a great experience at the AOS in Vegas, but got mauled at a barbershop in midtown manhattan. Looked like I'd been French kissed by a mountain lion.

Post a negative review on yelp and then walk away.

My barbershop stopped doing shaves a while back. They will still do it with carts for a handful of the old regulars, but shaves are not something they do for the

They are not allowed to use brushes or straights, which means only shavette type razors, which are not really meant for shaving your beard.

Like others above said, you always stop bad service as soon as it starts. If you wait till the end they will just think you're trying to skip out on the bill.

Barbershop shaves are long gone

The state doesn't care about you getting a bad shave and I guarantee that wasn't the reason for his previous problems. He has to do something really bad like steal, harass, or flat out malpractice, to get his license suspended.

Get on Yelp and tell your story leave him a review for the world to see. You can report him all you want but I can guarantee you nothing will be done. If you needed medical attention then yes reporting him would have gotten a look by the board that licenses beauticians in your area.

This is a lost art. For reference if any of you live Charlotte n.c. or visit the city, look up Cecil Taylor owner of the arcade Mens room in uptown Charlotte. He has been shaving folks since 1971. You will not be disappointed.
