Problem with Scuttle

Ok so here's the issue. I wanted to see what this fuss was about nice, warm lather so I picked up a scuttle. When using the scuttle, I've gone through a few tests and all have FAILED in two ways. 1, the lather isn't really warm and 2, the lather is warm but dries out beyond repair. That all being said, where is the happy medium?

As you have discovered, if the water is too warm the lather dries up. So try a few lathers, reducing the temperature each time until you get to the point where you lather stays hydrated for a 10 minute shave.

That's kind of the issue. I tried a few lathers and it seems that in order for me to get a lather that doesn't dry out after 10 minutes, there's really not a huge change in the temp of the lather then I would get without the scuttle. Maybe I should try going back to a regular bowl and see how much of a difference it does indeed make.

Two words: Face lather. Avoid the scuttle altogether. By face lathering you apply the warm water to your face after each pass and apply second to fourth of lather. If the brush itself is "cold" put just the tips in hot water and re apply lather.

I apologize for the ignorance, but how would face lathering keep the lather warm for each pass?

What scuttle are you using? That may help in determining a solution. I wouldn't get rid of your scuttle based on the opinion of face latherer fans. I do both and enjoy switching it up between face lathering and bowl lathering. Some people face lather but use a scuttle to keep their brush/cream warm between passes. Some people use just the scuttle to bowl lather. Some people bowl lather and then use their scuttle to warm the cream. YMMV. I have a Georgetown G20 scuttle and am pretty content with it.

I have the Estremoz scuttle. Actually it's THIS exact one. It's a nice two piece and rather large so it should hold a fair amount of heat but in doing so, my lather dries out. I guess something I should try is over compensating with water since I know that some will evaporate.

I had the same problem with Cella breaking down in the scuttle. I found more product with a proportionate amount of water keeps the lather from drying up. For me, it was practice and trial and error.

More product and more WATER since you're losing it to evaporation. I had the same issue when I first used a scuttle. I don't think you have to bring the water temp down, cuz that kind of defeats the purpose, no?

That's exactly my concern. You nailed it on the head my friend. I'm sitting there thinking "What do I do" and all I could think of is lowing the temp but in doing so, I might as well not use a scuttle. I'll try using more product as well as water as well as probably take more time making the lather so I can properly incorporate the added water. I found that after the later started to break down that if I added water it would just turn the later a bit slimy????

many soaps will break down with heat...mikes, MW, MWF etc. someone said it's lanolin, but since MW does not contain lanolin it must be something else with that one.

i have no issues with most of my creams and soaps, it's just MW i have to watch that i only use a warm water and not hot.

for my DB, when i was using AOS cream or GFT coconut cream, i can use extremely hot water and have no issues. when i bowl lahter, i always refreshin for a few seconds by swirling my brush in the scuttle.

form my SRD (or when using the DB as a brush scuttle) i just face lather and then rest my brush in between passes. the 1st pass is usually hot from the soaking water and the subsequent passes are usually warm from the heat of the scuttle.

sorry, i have read above and didn't see which product (soap/cream) you are using. if you let us know, it may narrow down what the issue may be.

some scuttle factors to consider are water temp used and how long you heat the scuttle before using. i am not familiar with your scuttle, so not sure how much water the outter bowl holds. my DB and SRD hold 20-22oz of water

i use HOT tap water, never boiling. fill in/out while i shower and soak my brush in the scuttle. 10min shower and then it's time to drain the scuttle, refill the outter bowl with hot water and then use.

Thanks for the info. So far, I've had poor results with any La Toja cream, WM Neumann signature cream and I believe one other. I think that I'll have to totally revisit my lather making process when using the scuttle.

I know the little Dirty Bird my sister bought me is a brush scuttle. Obviously smaller than the full sizers. Thats how I keep my brush/lather warm during passes. But I would imagine rxonmymind dips the tips into a wash bowl full of hot water, and once applied to the face, will work the warm water through the lather resulting in warm lather...

I melt a soap puck to the bottom of my scuttle. Then I pour near boiling water into the reservoir. Then I well-hydrate my soap. The result? Nice, hot, thick, lubricating lather for as long as I need it for.

I face lather but use a r Becker travel scuttle and using hot tap water it keeps lather warm for 2nd and third pads if I go for 4th pass its cooling off but never have it dry out. I use aos unscented cream
