What's new

Probably a silly questions, but, do you use a pre-shave?

I am a newb and I am trying to figure out if I should use a pre-shave? I do have pretty sensitive skin and I am not sure if because of that I should probably use one? Lol! I am so confused!

Lots of people do.

I have the proraso pre shave and the face freeze is cool, but I haven't noticed much actual difference in the shave. I've had it for a couple of months and only used it about 4 times.

I have very sensitive skin and I never use pre-shave.I just make sure to get my face wet with lots of hot water, and keep the shaving cream on my face for a few minutes before shaving and that seems to do the trick for softening my beard and keeping my skin happy.

I've used a combination of proraso pre shave which is good, trumpers skin food which also very good. Both do help to soften your beard for your shave and also reduce the chance of your razor skipping over area which may have not softened as much without a pre shave.

Analternatively you could try one method suggested by mantic59 on youtube. Use hair conditioner. Yes you heard right, hair conditioner, not the strengthening kind but rather the softening one. Once you complete your shower, spend another minute rubbing some conditioner into your beard, leave for a minute or whatever the manufacturer suggested and rinse off. Or use a barbershop style technique by applying hot water to your face, adding a layer of lather to your beard and then wrapping a hot, damp towel around yuor face for 3 minutes, either way your beard will be softer.

I use pre-shaves, but just for the hell of it. I see no difference in the quality of the shave either way.

I used to use Anthony Logistics for men pre-shave oil. I was under the impression that after years of shaving with a cartridge that it might help alleviate some of the razor burn and irritation. It didn't work.

Even tried it a few times since I've been wet shaving and not only did it not help at all, the oil would cause me to break out all over my neck making the next time I shaved more difficult and irritation prone.

I have since stopped using it all together and get GREAT shaves, that are completely ingrown and irritation free without it.

I'm of the school of thought that since I started DE shaving, using quality equipment, and most importantly practicing PROPER technique, that it's completely unnecessary.

I use them on occasion, it's debatable whether they make a difference in the shave I think.

But, if shaving irritates your face, they may be worth a try to cut down on that.

I can't shave without Proraso pre/post shave cream anymore. It's just not the same. That stuff made wetshaving worth it for me, plain and simple.

I used Castle Forbes Pre-Shave until it ran out, and now use Trumpers Coral Skin Food. I did trials with and without them, and got a more comfortable shave with them (I do NOT have sensitive skin). YMMV.

I use either Proraso pre shave cream or T+H pre shave oil. For me it results in a smoother shave.

+1, +1 and +1. That's exactly what I use, with the occasional substitution of Pacific Shave PSO. Some days one, some days the other, but most often I use one of these three pre-shave treatments. I've experimented with and without, and determined that, for me, I get a more comfortable shave with some sort of pre-shave.

YMMV, of course. Like has been said already, I would skip it for the time being and focus more on technique. Add the PSO to the routine after you get things pretty well in hand.

I have pre-shave oil which I use on rare occasion. I don't find it making much difference if I do a full prep. The one time it does help is when I'm on the run and don't have time to prep before shaving. In that case, a few drops of oil go a long way towards a serviceable shave.

I also let lather sit on my face for a few minutes while I brush my teeth, etc., before lathering up again and shaving. Seems to work pretty well.

Most veteran wetshavers don't use them.

They're recommended mainly by people who sell them.

Make of that what you will.
