Pre-Shave Oil...What say you?

I'm curious what you all would recommend for pre-shave oils. I have a pretty tough growth and the pre-shave oils I've used thus far seem somewhat helpful. I've been recommended the Anthony brand, which is about $20 for a small supply.

What's bugging me is that it's just a pre-shave lubricant. Is there a cost-effective solution you guys know about or must I deal with $20 for a couple of oz. supply of brand-name product?

i used to use it, but now i usually just rub some shaving cream on my beard before showering - i reckon it gives the same result: a bit of softening in conjunction with the steam.

I have a heavy beard too. Pre-wet, I used Somerset and King Of Shaves oils with a Sensor, with mixed results. Both are much cheaper than $20, I think. I preferred the King of Shaves to the Somerset, but I never combined either with decent wet-shaving prep. They're both sitting in the drawer now, so I might try them again someday.

According to others on this forum, you can also use olive oil as a pre-shave, or a mix of olive oil and castor oil. I haven't tried either idea myself.

I've found that quality products and proper beard prep make them unnecessary. I'm sure there are guys that have been doing this for a long time that use preshave oils, but I just rarely see any of the vets talking about them... ~shrug~

I know I have no use for them, but that's just me...

I've made my own. 2/3 castor oil, 1/3 olive oil (evoo) and a few drops of your favorite essential oil. You can make your own for pennies.

Used the Truefitt & Hill stuff a few times but it never seemed to make much difference (and it was pretty messy). Eventually sold it.

What is wrong with smelling like white clam sauce?

Actually, my wife's family is Sicilian. They'd love it!

I use Shave Secret as a pre-shave oil. It is fantastic stuff and is available at Wal-Mart for around $3. I recommend it

Now that's the bargain price!

OK, I'm gonna try mixing my own cocktail with some of the above mentioned oils and an essential. Hopefully, they won't be skin cloggers. I'll make sure I rinse thoroughly.

Used properly, you only use a few drops of pre-shave oil, so the chances of clogging your skin shouldn't be a factor.
