when i ship 1 razor to canada, it usually costs about $3-4 total. its like $1.75 for postage plus another dollar for the bubble mailer and another $0.50 for confirmation, or something like that.

i think ebayers jack up the shipping because you dont pay seller fees on shipping, just the bid amount. so if they know you are paying $20 for a razor, they would prefer you bid $10 and charge $10 for shipping, instead of $17 bid and $3 shipping.

i wouldnt sweat the shipping costs, just make sure you ONLY consider the costs together.

There are some who will not ship out of country without being able to prove delivery, which means a more expensive service. And then there are some who charge more to avoid final value fees on eBay.
Personally, I would avoid buying from an overcharging seller if possible, since if they're willing to bend the rules on eBay - jilting eBay out of their fees, what else are they willing to do? exaggerate condition or outright lie? Though with collectible items it's not that easy to find someone else with the exact thing you're looking for.

Some e-bay seller try to make with excess postage what they don't make on the sale.
My particular peeve is a well known seller of razors on e-bay who not only over charges on his shipping but refuses to combine shipping if you win multiple auctions.
His razor are place in a bag inside a 5 by cube box, and then he whines about the e-bay fees and his high shipping costs.
I ship world wide so I know how much it cost and how much labor is involved packing items.

both items i got were packed in bubble wrap .but i won't pay 10.00plus for shipping its easier to got flea markets and antique stores

Shipping to Canada, for me, means I can't just print a label, print a stamp and drop it off.
I have to go and stand in line and get the customs form, and fill it out, and get back in line, and mail it out.
All of this during lunch, when the P.O. is most crowded, and I miss my lunch meal to boot.
Time has value.

International mailing through Pay Pal sucks, it won't let you send a package 1st class over seas only express or priority.
I keep a 1/2 dozen customs form on hand so at least I have everything filled out before I go to the post office.
Also the printed labels are too big for the 000 padded mailers I use most often so many Tuesdays I'm at the post office with between 6 and 12 packages to ship, I try not to go between 11 and 1pm because that's when it's most crowded and the clerks take their staggered lunch breaks.

Shipping to Canada, first class, runs between $2.00 and $5.00, depending on weight. No delivery confirmation, no insurance.

To ship Priority, there are two choices:

You can ship in a flat rate box, with no delivery confirmation, and no insurance. Cost is around $11.00. You can purchase it through Paypal even, tho Paypal shows the wrong customs form.

You can ship Priority and pay by the ounce, and then obtain proof of delivery and insurance. Cost is $20.00 plus.

Both of these options apply worldwide, I do believe.

I just went through this procedure shipping a package to Canada. The thing is, the USPS website does not give all the correct info; I had to go to my local office to get the right fees.

I actually don't mind the extra steps, as long as the buyer is willing to pick up the costs and risk of an uninsured package. Problem is, on eBay, if you can't provide proof of delivery, you eat it. That is why some sellers charge $20++ to ship.

Correct; they won't; they also don't sell media mail postage online and a few other things. It is hang-up with the post office--you can't even buy first class international online at the USPS website. It is a real drag when you have a good sized order of books to ship.

My solution is to not do business with people like that.

That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!! :closedeye

But, I only add $2.00 handling charge to the actual postage cost for international bidders. That covers my packaging costs plus the time and trip to the post office. I ship First Class Parcel, which generally costs less than $3.00 for a common razor in a box to Canada. (My domestic shipments are a flat-fee First Class, which factors in about $1.40 handling charge.)

On a less common item, or one that I anticipate selling for more than $50, my international method becomes Flat-Rate Priority Mail.

About 10% of my sales recently have been international. That implies an additional 10% in watchers and bidders as well - not a bad thing!!

I do agree with the OP in that there are MANY eBay sellers that just jack the shipping to the point that their shipping becomes a major profit center for them. I shy away from items with unreasonable shipping costs, unless the bid is so low that the total is still a deal.

I remember picking up a Super Speed on eBay for a low opening bid plus high shipping . . . total cost around $10 but with $8 of that shipping. Seller wrapped the razor in one layer of newspaper and stuffed it in a manila envelope. Hand written address, and less than $2 postage. I felt "used and abused" on that one, even though the item was reasonable for the total cost.
