"Look what I found"
Two nice scores today on my working vacation at a new flea market. A Coticule and a Thuringain are making there way home with me. The Coti is a deep rock style stone measuring 5 x 2 1/2 x 1. The Thuri is a banded, blue-green, Barber Gem sized stone measuring 5 x 2 1/2 x 3/4. It may have started its life as a Escher or SRD, but alas, no label

Found a labeled "Norton Abrasives No. 1 Washita Oil Stone" with the "Pike" logo also on the label.
It's pretty clean and has a very, very slight dish on both working sides.
The size is 6"x2"x1" and only has two small chips on two corners.

I would like to clean it and flatten it but I don't think the label could withstand just flattening it. The only thing holding the label together is the glue holding it to the stone.
I have 8 other Hard Arks and I really don't NEED to use this one so how important is this label?

In the photo the right corner of the label is missing, it was not glued down and I tried to see if I could remove it. It just fell apart, but it shows how white the stone is underneath it. The box is a little to big so I don't think it came with the stone.

Very nice score. I have had good luck removing the side label with a new single edge blade. I tried on three and succeeded on all. It reminded me of the nervousness I have pinning ivory scales. Carefully scraped off, but they are thin and fragile. And do it indoors if you try. I did one outside, wind blew the label on the ground and a corner broke off. If you lose the label, it just another #1 lost to time. IMO, a lot of the nicer Washita are most likely #1 that lost the labels over the decades

"Look what I found"
After a month on a working vacation, I am glad to be home. I did find the time to do some shopping. Flea market, antique shows, thrift stores and such yielded a cornucopia of stones. A selection of B-hones, Arks, Slates, a synthetic Coti and some interesting mystery stones. The mysteries are cased, oil soaked primitive rocks with streaks of purple, green, and red. Into the dip and see what comes out

Thanks David @Dcaddo once again for the comments. It is a nice gathering. They are starting to slowly come out if the dip and have my first casualty. The synthetic Coti is the real deal. The dip is the truth detector

Not really a stone, so maybe I’m posting in the wrong thread?

So, I knew a Swaty was a barber hone that gets some airtime. And I could afford to blow 5 bucks, so this is what I got:

2 1/16 x 5 3/16”
No box or other packaging. I understand that I can/should lap and bevel it if I get serious about using it to finish or touch up.

In the same display case (for double the price, outrageous!) was an unbranded barber hone, cardboard carton said ‘made in austria’, no markings on the hone. Seemed to be very pristine. Might go back and grab that one, just to have two new toys. If I buy it, I can disassemble the box and read the instructions (?) inside, might even find out the maker.

Nice score on the Swaty. Looking forward to seeing what the second stone is.

I have years of training and experience. ;)

She’s a real looker. And her last boyfriend treated her right.
So I , obedient to years of training and experience, did the RIGHT THING:

And, instead of branding, a lovely Meditation on razor hones.

That’s neat! I don’t recall seeing one of those before. Can you post a pic of the side of the stone?

I was just curious as to what the course/fine transition looked like. It may have had a sticker on one side telling which side was coarse and which was fine. I don’t see any difference from the top to bottom so assuming that’s the original stone it was likely all the same stone that was just dressed differently from top to bottom.
