What's new

Post your local/flea market stone scores. (There's none left. Tim found them all.)

It was a deal in a cul de sac, along with a handful of others. The first image is the before lapping shot. A very nice vintage thuringian 175x40x18mm

"Look what I found"
Went to the estate sale of a knife guy and found some boxes to rummage thru. While most of the collection was kept by family members (and should stay in the family) they left behind a few nuggets. Three Cotiicules and a Trans Ark were the fruits of my labor. The Trans has the outline of the Norton sticker on the side. As a bonus there was a Delron handled Ka-Bar with sheath. The knife is crying to visit the stones. YEAH!!!

Great finds, Tim!

I'd love to be able to be at my estate sale.

"Up next we have a small honing stone thingy that's black on one side and red on the other and says norton. Sold for 10 dollars to the man in the straw hat!"

Found an old behr/norton hard Arkansas that has a couple different veins that run through it. Looks like light translucent along one edge, most of the rest is dark and not translucent, though there’s one spot of dark translucent on one face. Found it yesterday at a recycled building supply store

Very nice, I’ve always wished I could find that kind of stuff around here. Only things I ever see are one by 4 inch washitas for 50 bucks or 8 x 2” Ones for 200 bucks

Found this for about 1 euro at Klintehamn, Gotland (grinding and honing pt3). It sheds grit like there's no tomorrow. Old guys swear on how badass the Gotlands stone is, and I dont, so there's a interesting thing to keep the insanity at the camping site at bay.

Sandstone glued to untreated pine with wooden glue suggests a: use it dry. Or b: it shouldn't be glued to a soft piece of wood because you should use water. Or b: i don't know anything.

What it is, I'll let somebody else guess. But the previous owner was right handed and perhaps got tired of the strop as the wood got warped. The longsides of the leather is worn thru leaving the center untouched. Perhaps the white stuff is paste, perhaps it's mold. After all, it got really bent out of shape. Probably from getting wet/dry in a bad way. Maybe they should have glued it better at the factory. Maybe they should have used quarter sawn wood instead of Popsicles.
A good day in the crates!

Google Slaughter translates the text on the sleeve into:
"when pulling off it should be noted: first pull the knife firmly on the stony side, then gradually lightening it all, depending on the same being more or less dull, then spread it on red. Side off and it results in the finest sharpness."

Gonna take that stony stone and side it off ;)

Sure thing!
Don know much about those. Have to read and test.
By the way, sorry guys for coming of like Smarty Smartypants. I don't want to sound like a detective, I have no idea if the guy honing on the stone used his right hand or left foot. I got eager.
