Post-Shave Burn.hours later?

This one I'm just not getting. I've been experimenting with post-shave treatments to help alleviate the random burn I sometimes get, though usually it's right after shaving. A few times I have not applied any treatment, but usually I do and lately I've not had any burn until a few hours later. I hadn't scratched my neck (where the burn is) nor wore anything tight around my neck, nor were the days so hot nor was I doing anything to break a sweat, so I'm not understanding how the heck I'm getting burn hours afterwards. Anyone else get this?

Never had this, but could it be the balms or whatever you are using is enhancing the irritation/burn.
i would highly suggest Unrefined Shea Butter; possibly the best moisturizer you will ever try.
Good luck.

I've had that happen too, not exactly sure why either. Ever since I started using Weleda Aftershave Balm I have not had any issues. For me and my skin, this stuff works wonders. Soothes my skin, kills any burn or irritation and helps my skin heal. Amazing.

Even when I had not applied anything I got burn about 1-2 hours later. It's also happened a few times after applying Nivea post-shave balm. FWIW, if I apply anything I try to apply it WTG so as not to irritate the skin.

I get something similar from time to time. As best as I can tell it is irritation from hair growing back. The very bottom of my neck is the hardest spot for me to keep proper blade angle which , on occasion, leads to an unusual regrowth. I'm not sure if this is the actual cause but it is all I've come up with so far.

could this be due to not moisturising enough and the skin being irritated only hours later once it dries out?

I was in Sweden for christmas and I hadn't brought any aftershave or balm since I was growing a beard and only shaving my neck and cheeks. Even on days I didn't shave, the area round my mouth was red an irritated and burning and I thought I was allergic to a soap or something but it was just the really dry indoors and car weather drying out my beard and skin and it went away when I started moisturising.

The fact you still got irritation after using Nivea balm makes me think this isn't what's happening to you but maybe you could try using a bit more or applying a little again in the middle of the day to see what happens?

Maybe your neck needs to dry out first. Had the same problem last summer (Greek summer with day temperature over 38C) and i noticed that this was cause because i was sweating. Salts from sweat mixed with the ASB oils make a bad combo.

I then tried an ASL first with witch hazel (Proraso Green), followed by an ASB ~10mins later and i was very satisfied. Since then i stick to that method all year round. Imagine i have to wear a tie for about 10hrs straight (police uniform) and no irritations at all.

Give it a shot and let us know how it went.

On the rare occasion that I suffer such irritation that may be shave related I use D R Harris Pink aftershave. It is very soothing on application and leaves a good protective residue. I have a bottle of 100 ml that I have been using for about ten years. Still half full. A little goes a long way. Hope you figure out the cause of your issue and find a fix.

I tried Thayer's nonscented witch hazel w/aloe. Interesting that I didn't feel anything. I slapped on a copious amount instead of rubbing it in because I think rubbing may irritate the skin. About 20mins later I wanted to scratch my neck off. I'm not pushing my '63 SS and trying to be gentle with as few passes as possible on my neck but still getting the burn. I've even tried shaving just WTG. I guess I have extremely sensitive skin on my neck. So far the best has been Nivea After Shave Balm for sensitive skin but I feel there's got to be something better out....just gotta find it. I think I'll switch back to using bowl-lathered HeadSlick from my current VDH-stick face lathering.

That's my theory too. I have similar issues and very thick dark hair and this is what I put it down to.

I've come across that situation from time to time when I just go overboard and get too aggressive. Seems like whatever I put on to soothe it feels great at first and then an hour or two it gets itchy and burns. Someone mentioned ingrown hairs I think. It could be that. I tend to think that my skin wants to heal but after a couple hours the pores become to clogged and just needs to be cleaned. I have washed my face off with Nivea for men moisturizing face wash in cool water and that seems to help and my face doesn't dry out. I certainly notice an improvement. Anytime my shave is too aggressive I simply rinse off the later and then go ahead and wash my face with that and leave it at that. If after an hour I feel like it's doing well I might apply some Speick aftershave as a followup and that will be all for the day.

This is very interesting - I was about to start a thread asking exactly this question!

The last couple of shaves I've had, have been quite warm days and I've gone pretty much from the bathroom straight out into the garden to start working. By lunchtime I've had horrible spots, burning and rash all over my neck, and it wasn't until I washed up for lunch and went back out that I realised it was probably from where I was sweating.

I like the subtle smell of the ASBs so I'll see if I can find some witch hazel and try that next time.

Thanks :)

When I have a rough shave I like to rub ice in on my face after the alum. Then I apply witch hazel followed by ASB. The ice seems to help me allot.
