possible mega deal on collectible set of straights? what do you think?

Hey gents, I've been looking at getting into straights for a while and today I stumbled across what looks like a great deal, but you guys tell me just how much of one.

I've found a set of 7 Solingen 5/8 blades. They're round tip and each of them has "souvenier of xxx" on it with XXX being a german city. They're in mostly good shape, blade edge is good. There is some slight rust on some of the blades but nothing bad that can't be buffed out. Scales are immaculate. All of them for $75 and they're supposed to be pre-WWII items. I don't think they've been used as there is little to no hone wear on the spine.

I know it's a good deal, but how good a deal really? Look forward to your oppinion.

I wouldn't call it a mega deal. Those sets were massed produced and show up all the time. If they are in clean, restored condition you could maybe get $250-300 for it. I'm sorry to rain on your parade but it's not that rare or valuable. In that condition, it's worth more than $75, but it isn't a mega dollar set in any condition

As Greekguy mentioned, I've seen several of those sets. However If they are as you described for that price I would buy them in an instant.

Thanks for the info guys, exactly what I was looking for.

Can anyone tell me if they're worthwhile razors to buy and use for myself? Is there a difference in quality between them and a current Dovo blade?

I would have to see them but I believe they are probably low quality razors meant as just that. Souvenirs. Can you shave with them? Well you can shave with a soup can lid but I won't. If your money is tight leave them where they lay.

unless you love them, i might pass depending on how much funds you have. it is not expensive and a decent deal, but this isn't going to likely be a cinderella story of overlooked straights given a shine and now the belle of the ball.

on the other hand, having a 7 day set seems kind of neat and they probably shave decent.. for $75 i would get em.

Those sets were made by any one of several Solingen manufacturers. They can range from good (a typical Solingen blade) to very good, depending on who the manufacturer was. I have an orphan from one of those sets made by Schulze that is a first class shaver.
The scales are usually plastic and nothing special but I have seen some sets with Mother of Pearl overlays and silver inserts.
Buy 'em.

If you can hone them yourself, that's a really good deal.

The razors are likely to be pretty good shavers, and can even be great shavers. They're unlikely to be superlative blades, but they're still worth a few times what the asking price is.

I'd get them.

Now half as wise
Get them. I have 4 from a 7 day set. They are about 7/8, though, but are great shavers. For $10 per razor you can at the very least have something to practice honing, but if they are anything like mine you'll be pleased.
