This is sad news. I met Steve Smith at the Northwest Tea Festival in Seattle a few years ago. I regularly buy loose-leaf tea online from his shop. The black teas are high quality and reasonably priced.
Regarding the Starbucks angle, one wonders why Starbucks did not do a better job capitalizing on their purchase of Tazo in ~1998 for $9.1 Million. 14 years later in late 2012 they spend $620 Million for Teavana. Teavana may have had more storefronts and assets to justify a higher price, but seems that Starbucks had what they needed from Tazo.
