What's new

Polo

It's years since I last smelled Ralph Lauren Polo (Green), and I'd really forgotten what it's like - I've sampled the Big Pony ones more recently, and didn't much like them.

But when I saw Polo Green on offer at Boots (UK chain) at £40 for the 118ml bottle a few days ago I tried it - and I really liked it.

I had some Boots vouchers at home, so I went out again today with them and got the bottle (with an extra £5 off, and extra card points), and I've now been wearing it for about six hours. It's a real classic scent - the pine, leather and patchouli notes are terrific!

Anyone else love this stuff?

I absolutely love the stuff but don't really ever wear it. It was my first frag purchase ever and I'll always have a bottle.

I can only wear it when it's cold and rainy outside. Even if I don't go out in it. It's my comfort scent for when I'm lounging around the house.

The Big Pony offerings are heresy, but I do recommend you give the late Polo Crest a try if you can find it (now discontinued) or even the more recent Modern Reserve. Of them all, I still prefer the original. Timeless classic. Take it easy on the trigger though, or you'll be "that guy".

I have an (almost full) vintage bottle. It's wayy too much for me and I enjoy strong powerful scents. The pine is just overwhelming and it's one of the few frags that will give me a headache.

I remember it fondly and wish I hadn't dropped my bottle of it moving 7-8 years ago. I changed jobs at the time and needed to go minimal on scents or I would have gotten a replacement bottle.

Now that summer is hopefully finally here in PA (snowstorm on Monday!), I should get me some...

@Ben - if you're not using it, there's a forum for that... <hint hint>

Thanks, I'll keep an eye open for them.

Yep, it's pretty potent stuff :biggrin1:

Great stuff! Polo still gets me compliments from the ladies......

I used to think it was admired only by the 35 and up crowd, but the last time I wore it out of the house, I put a light application on and went into the office sort of hoping no one would know I was rocking Polo. I younger 20 something commented on how nice I smelled which left me sort of baffled, but I suppose stood as testimony that it isn't just for the older crowd. :)

Lol I posted it for trade a while ago and no one was interested. I might re-post for sale though soon.

I guess I should read the manual before asking a stupid question.. :cursing:

I missed the thread but I don't have any of the ones you wanted to try so I guess I'll just wait around for the 30-day limit to rollover. I've got gallons of stuff so no hurries here...

It was my first cologne in my teens and I still have a bottle I bought in the 90's. I always get compliments on the scent. Top notch for sure!

I've always liked Polo but SWMBO loves the stuff so I wear it around the house often. I really love the drydown.

It was my signature scent early last decade. I remember getting several compliments whilst at work on a client site. People kept asking me what it was that I was wearing. I've recently got a bottle of Safari which I enjoyed back in 1995 - looking forward to wearing that in the warmer weather. Although the way our weather is here in the UK right now, Polo Green would be better suited!!

Has Polo Green been reformulated? I feel like there's a harsher, almost tarry note alongside the leather now. Any thoughts?

No, it has definitely been reformulated. The oakmoss has but all been removed and replaced with the synthetic treemoss molecule stuff. By today's standards, it's still quite the freight train, but not nearly as potent as my vintage bottle. The top notes of both bottles are definitely very, very harsh, but the vintage even more so IMO. The dry down is where this one really shines a few hours after application.

Current formula = 14+ hours. Vintage Polo? More like 36 hours on a single spray. You can't even get it off in the shower.

I started wearing Ralph Lauren Polo in the late 1990s. I can clearly remember the first time I tried it out in a shop with a single spray to my wrist. It was unlike anything I had tried before (which, at that point, wasn’t much); the dry, herbal nature of Polo was new territory for me. A day or two after that spray I returned to the same shop and purchased the large 4oz (118ml) bottle. Over the next few years I purchased one of these bottles every six-months or so, and used Polo on a daily basis. I started buying the shower gel (labelled ‘bracing shower gel’; an excellent high quality shower gel), the deodorant spray (good product, but the sprayers were a bit hit-and-miss and prone to malfunctioning), the stick deodorant (not so great, and prone to drying out) and the shaving foam. The ‘bath-and-body’ products have disappeared from the market during recent years (at least here in the UK). For a while, I was able to buy the ‘bracing shower gel’ (2 large tubes at a time) from a US-based seller, but the supply seems to have dried up. Right now I have an 8oz (237ml) bottle of the EdT that’s about three-quarters full, and still have a can of the shaving foam that I use once in a while.

My current bottle is from 2007 (although I didn't buy it until a couple of years after that), and I don't notice any differences from the other bottles I've had over the years.

I love it, unfortunately when I met the wife and we started dating she wasn't fond of it to say the least. It's kind of funny to think about it now but I was 19 and wearing Polo when everyone else was into the CK, A&F, citrus type of scents. I'd like to think there's something we could both agree on but she likes things like Aqua di Gio and Polo Blue. I'd be happy smelling like a campfire, leather and fresh cracked pepper.

The scent has stayed pretty true to form IMO. You'd only likely really see the gap if you had a vintage bottle to compare the current formula to. It's not an entirely different scent or vastly different by any means. Just a bit less potent and less "full" if comparing it to older juice.
