Poll: Does a slant or an open comb offer the closer/smoother shave?

From which razor do you get the closest and smoothest shave?

  • slant

  • open comb

  • they equally provide a close/smooth shave

For those of you who have tried both, I was wondering how you would weigh in on the question noted in the poll.

I got moves like Jagger
You can get a smooth, close shave from just about any razor. I really like the slant, but the 3-piece OC was my travel razor of choice until I turned to straights.

I somehow manage to get a perfect shave no matter what I pick up. Any DE, SE, Injector, or straight razor. Does not matter, my shave is always the same perfect BBS regardless of what tool or product (soap, cream, shave stick) I use.

That's why all of my reviews say everything is GREAT $smiley_ROFLMAO.gif

I don't want people to get distracted by the question. I know you can get great shaves from razors other than slants and oc's, that's a given. This question/poll is specifically for slants and open combs only. If you've tried both, which one of the two options give the closer, smoother shave in your experience?

Just revisiting the world of slants this morning, with my newly aquired 37c. I have a Mergress and a OC Muhle (2010). I have spots on each side of my chin, in the goatee area I guess. This area is super dense, and hurts to shave. Even with my feathers loaded up, great prep, and techniques, it still kinda hurts to shave. This morning with the slant, it sliced right through it like I had pre pubecent hair growth. NO PAIN no tugging, just hot knife through butter. I may become a slant guy again, never remember why I sold both 37&39 away to begin with. Oh yeah, and I used my barbasol yellow canned lather too!! Bwahahahahaa

I think a slant is a little more forgiving than an Open Comb. I have a vintage Hoffritz slant that I have used for the last couple years in rotation. Additionally I have a New Standard and Apollo Open Comb, both provide a very close shave but I think you need to be more aware when you use them. I tend to get a little razor burn if I do not take my time with the Open Combs.

me too - I do need to practice my OC shaving technique as my angles are all wrong when neck shaving.

Its a loaded question. As far a slants go there aren't many options. As far as open combs there is quite a variety. I would say the slant is better than my Gillette old type or my Merkur 15 c but what about a fat tip or the Muhle hybrid open comb etc. etc. I'm a +1 to achieving a good shave via proper technique, granted that might change with each unique razor.

You've also used EVERY type of blade on the market. Should we call you Sensei? Or maybe now we should call sensei's "turtle" when they reach the final level :)

I would say both are capable of the same result.

From my own particular perspective, coming at this with a thick, fast growing beard, and very resilient skin, I find the Open Comb R41 loaded with a Feathers gets me to BBS in fewer passes and less effort than the 39C Slant Bar loaded with the same blade.
