Polishing Shoes

Good Evening!

My name is Jerry and I wear Dr. Comfort Scott shoes which are Velcro because I wear orthopedic inserts in my shoes because my left side is shorter than my right side.

My question is I have applied kiwki products that make the shoe waterproof and then use kiwki black shoe polish (liquid) to polish my shoes. I notice that the leather flakes off over time.

Here is the link to the shoe:

What should I use to polish my shoes? Should I water proof them or not?

Any recommendations for shoes that you can wear that you don’t have to tie?

I like the New Balance 840 v4

I would graciously appreciate any help.

Best

Are you sure it's not the polish that flakes off? That Kiwi liquid stuff is about like a coat of paint. It builds up on the surface. Coat after coat will cause it to crack. I had a career that required polished shoes. You could always tell used that stuff by the cracks in the wrinkles.

The best liquid product I have ever used is Doc Baileys. I have used it on footwear, jackets, chaps and leather saddlebags with no problems.

YMMV

1. If I were you, I would strip off all of the polish to date with 91% rubbing alcohol or a shoe industry product like Angelus shoe deglazer

2. I would then recondition the leather with 2 or 3 applications of Bicks # 4

https://www.amazon.com/Bickmore-Bic...&qid=1669154088&sprefix=bicks+4,aps,94&sr=8-3

3. I would then polish my shoes with a quality cream polish with at least 2 coats.

You will have a well shinned water resistant shoe. Given how the linked shoe is sewn together, I am not sure it could be effectively "waterproofed."

NOTE-The products that I have recommended are representative and exceed the intersection of quality and value.

I did the procedure outlined above on a pair of modest quality all leather dress shoes from eBay that had a shiny spayed on finish with solid results.

Re shoelaceless shoes

I would then hone in on a model I licked and see if I could not find it even cheaper from the manufacture direct or another retailer.

Should I water proof them or not?

Do you need to? Are you likely to be wading through parking lot puddles, or some other high-water-contact activities?

And of course, "water proof" is why we have rubber boots. "Water resistance" is what we expect out of regular footwear if we are lucky and if we treat them with the appropriate treatments.

Looks like you are applying wax/polish on top of a "repellent" , so it is repelling the moisture in the wax/polish .. Try reversing the procedure . As doj pros states above , strip the leather with 91% rubbing alcohol, it will not harm the leather . Give it a nice massage with Venetian Shoe Cream , it's the best . Wipe it off after 30 minutes, brush the shoe , then apply your wax or polish . You probably won't need waterproofing but if you do apply it after you have enriched and recolored the leather ...
