Polishing Shell Cordovan with a deer bone

I got my first pair of cordovan shoes back in 1963 and have been wearing them on and off since then. I honestly cannot say that I had heard about the bone until recently. One of my current pair is about 15 years old and still look good, the other pair I have only had for a couple of months. I did notice that the newer pair would develop "bubbles" in the leather or little bumps when they got wet, but would disappear after drying.

"Got Shoes?"
What a good idea! I (used to) rub the scratch with my finger.

I put a little polish on the scratch and put the back of the spoon to work on it. Repeat a couple times, if necessary. I learned this little trick while researching the idea of getting a deer bone. So far, it has worked fine.

Some folks swear by the deer bone, others find it gimmicky. Some people swear by the teaspoon, others use it to stir their tea.

I acquired my deer bone a few months ago and have used it on all of my shell shoes. It not only smooths the leather, but also transfers a bit of the oils from the bone to the hide. I can't say for certain, but it seemed to help condition re leather and did smooth some of the small water bumps, and I'd guess it will help more in the long run keeping the hide fed.
