Point & Shoot Digital Camera

Hey gang,

I find myself in need of advice once again...

I am preparing for my holiday vacation... I want to capture all of our moments without having to wait 5 minutes to take a picture...

I will be replacing my current digital camera a Cannon Digital Elph 7.1 MP It was great a few years ago but compared to other cameras out at the moment it is super slow.... all suggestions are welcomed thanks again...

I've looked at quite a few P&S digitals and I still think the Canon's are the best. Also if you just had one, you'll find the menus and functions easier to pick up again. So my vote is for something like the PowerShot 780is. The 700-800 series are good, I think the 1000 series are more minimalist/smaller? the 900 series I think have useless gadgets. From what i remember.

My suggestion is to make sure whatever p&s camera you buy, get one that takes AA batteries. It's no good traveling and the proprietary battery dies with no way of charging it. Like the Canon PowerShot A1100IS or Nikon Coolpix L-20.

I believe that ISO should be one of your top considerations. The higher the ISO the better. The higher the ISO the better it is at taking pictures in darker conditions. And, that makes a huge difference throughout the life of the camera. With a high ISO setting, you will get less blurry pictures.

The Canon G10 is one of the current "go to" point and shoot favored by people who make a living with a camera.

It's slightly larger than a lot of point shoots, but not huge and unwieldy.
Might be pricey depending on your budget. Appx $450 or so.

I got the Power Shot SX110IS a few months ago because I love Canon cameras and this one takes AA batteries. It takes very good photos but I am disappointed in the build quality and how long it takes the camera to reset between shots - indoors sometimes it takes 7-10 seconds to be ready for the next shot and this is way too long to capture anything spontaneously. I was at a party last Friday and a friend who's a professional photographer had the G10, the thing is built like a tank and it was very quick on turnaround. I'm going to look into it further, I came away very impressed.

is it similar to the G11???

The Panasonic Lumix series always gets good reviews.
The DMC-ZS3 has a 12X optical zoom and image stabilization. It's a 10 meg CCD. It doesn't take AA batteries, but it does get 300 shots per charge.
You should be able to get it for under $300. If you belong to Costco, I think they have a package deal with memory for under $280.

And, you can't go wrong with a Canon. There are many to choose from.

Do you want something that can fit in a pocket, or are you willing to have something bigger? That will help you narrow down your choices.

The Lumix LX3 is simply an amazing camera. I tried all manner of small Canons and nothing came close to the LX3 except possibly the Canon G10 in full light conditions (it's shaped like a brick though). I found the G10 to be pretty bad at anything higher than ISO 200. The Lumix has HD video, is quite compact, and looks pretty retro too. :thumbup1:

Our old Cannon Elph was bulky... we would like something small but I don't really care about the size... I want picture quality with this purchase... and yes I am a costco member

Nobody seems to have more time to write lengthy, technical reviews than digital camera fans.

There's any number of web sites that will pop up if type in the name of a camera and add "review" to the end of it.

That would be one way to find out the cycle time. I haven't wrung it out, but I would guess the faster cameras start to go up in price.

I bought the Cannon G10 because I wanted something smaller than the big clunky Sony I have. It's worked for me well, but it is not very "pocketable" if that is a consideration.

Ah nuts...now there's a G11? Just looked it up quickly and they may be worth a look. Looks cheaper than the G10 was for me too by a lot if you internet purchase.

I would seriously look to stepping up to a DSLR if you are spending more than $500. A Canon Digital Rebel will do everything you need and the big bonus, the lenses are interchangable.

I have a Panasonic Lumix which is a few years old now but it has been a great little camera. And the Leica lens lives up to its reputation. Fantastically sharp. I think the Panasonic/ Leica combination camera's cannot be beat for value.
