From the moorlands and the meadows
to this city of the shadows
Where I wander old and lonely
comes a call I understand
In clear soft notes enthralling
it is calling ever calling
'Tis the spirit of the open
from the dear old borderland.

For this grim huge city daunts me
it's wail of sorrow haunts me,
A nameless figure tossed amidst
the human surf that beats,
Forever and forever in a frenzy of endeavor
All along the cruel barriers
of its never ending streets.

But I'll leave it in the morning
slip away without a warning
Save a handclasp from the friend
that knows the call that leads me on
in the city's clang and clatter,
one old man the less won't matter
And no one here will say my name
or care that I am gone.

By Caddonfoot I'll linger
it has charms to stay the singer
And from the bridge a painter's dream
of beauty there I'll see
But I'll leave it all behind me
when the purple evening shadows find me
past the vines of Clovenfords
to haunted Torwoodlee.

Fair Dryburough and Melrose,
touched by the wizard's spell arose
And Bemerside and Leaderfoot
Elwyn's fairy dene
With the Tweed serenely gliding,
clearly seen and shyly hiding
where Eildons raise their triple crest
to sentinel the scene.

But alas the dream is over
I awake now to discover
The city's rush the bustling crowds
and the din on every hand
But my ears a-softly falling
I can hear the curlews calling
And I know that soon I'll see them
in the dear old borderland.

Peace in the hush of the twilight, balm ere my eyelids close,
This will the fifty give me, asking nought in return,
With only a Suttee’s passion—to do their duty and burn.

A million surplus Maggies are willing to bear the yoke;

Rudyard was a very staunch FM and you can see that in his poetry and prose, including this one. Love it.

sure, I know that you are tired of hearing about it, but
most repeat the same theme over and over again, it's
as if they were trying to refine what seems so strange
and off and important to them, it's done by everybody
because everybody is of a different stripe and form
and each must work out what is before them
over and over again because
that is their personal tiny miracle
their bit of luck

like now as like before and before I have been slowly
drinking this fine red wine and listening to symphony after
symphony from this black radio to my left

some symphonies remind me of certain cities and certain rooms,
make me realize that certain people now long dead were able to
transgress graveyards

and traps and cages and bones and limbs

people who broke through with joy and madness and with
insurmountable force

in tiny rented rooms I was struck by miracles

and even now after decades of listening I still am able to hear
a new work never heard before that is totally
bright, a fresh-blazing sun

there are countless sub-stratas of rising surprise from the
human firmament

music has an expansive and endless flow of ungodly
exploration

writers are confined to the limit of sight and feeling upon the
page while musicians leap into unrestricted immensity

right now it's just old Tchaikowsky moaning and groaning his
way through symphony #5
but it's just as good as when I first heard it

I haven't heard one of my favorites, Eric Coates, for some time
but I know that if I keep drinking the good red and listening
that he will be along

there are others, many others

and so
this is just another poem about drinking and listening to
music

repeat, right?

but look at Faulkner, he not only said the same thing over and
over but he said the same
place

so, please, let me boost these giants of our lives
once more: the classical composers of our time and
of times past

it has kept the rope from my throat

maybe it will loosen
yours
 
this is a fun thread, I've subscribed now. I don't read enough poetry. In my day I read a lot of Poe, Kipling, Yeats and Nash. My late mother was very much into poetry and would read us poems as children. I still have Lear's The Owl and the Pussycat committed to heart.

Probably not Al Bundy
Today's the birthday of Irish poet Eavan Boland who passed away earlier this year. I appreciated reading a quote from her on the importance of the oral tradition in Irish poetry "Poetry is one of the most fugitive arts: it can be assigned to memory, taken and hidden in the mind, smuggled into smoky cabin back rooms, recited there and then conveyed only by speech to another person. It is therefore the most likely to survive colonization."

How We Made a New Art on Old Ground

A famous battle happened in this valley.
You never understood the nature poem.
Till now. Till this moment—if these statements
seem separate, unrelated, follow this

silence to its edge and you will hear
the history of air: the crispness of a fern
or the upward cut and turn around of
a fieldfare or thrush written on it.

The other history is silent: The estuary
is over there. The issue was decided here:
Two kings prepared to give no quarter.
Then one king and one dead tradition.

Now the humid dusk, the old wounds
wait for language, for a different truth:
When you see the silk of the willow
and the wider edge of the river turn

and grow dark and then darker, then
you will know that the nature poem
is not the action nor its end: it is
this rust on the gate beside the trees, on

the cattle grid underneath our feet,
on the steering wheel shaft: it is
an aftermath, an overlay and even in
its own modest way, an art of peace:

I try the word distance and it fills with
sycamores, a summer's worth of pollen
And as I write valley straw, metal
blood, oaths, armour are unwritten.

Silence spreads slowly from these words
to those ilex trees half in, half out
of shadows falling on the shallow ford
of the south bank beside Yellow Island

as twilight shows how this sweet corrosion
begins to be complete: what we see
is what the poem says:
evening coming—cattle, cattle-shadows—

and whin bushes and a change of weather
about to change them all: what we see is how
the place and the torment of the place are
for this moment free of one another.

The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks:
The long day wanes: the slow moon climbs: the deep
Moans round with many voices. Come, my friends,
'T is not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down:
It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.
Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
