Pocket Edition Case Restore/ PICs

This is still a work in progress. Here's some before and after picks of a pocket edition that I found this past weekend. I'm in the process of getting it ship-shape.

As you can see, it's in pretty rough shape. There is no handle for the razor, and the head is shot. It's warped. The lining is rotted and there is a lot of plating wear on the case. I'm going to put a Tech in this when I find one.

The latch has also broken loose. Thankfully the latch was included so I can repair it. It was originally soldered to the shell of the case. The solder joint has failed. That's something I can easily rectify.

Ok, here's some after pics. I've cleaned up the shell and soldered the latch back into place. At work we have a spot plater for doing silver plate touch-ups on flutes and trumpets. I used it on the shell. It's not made to do extensive plating; just small touchups. Even though the spot plater is not made to plate large areas, I think the results are pretty good.

Here I've got the trays out. I've tossed the old linings. They're shot. I cleaned the rust off the trays, and I'm thinking of using some purple material from an Allen Edmonds shoe bag. You'll notice that I saved the Gillette logo from the old lining. That's still in good shape, and I'll attach that again once I get the lining replaced.

I'm not sure how I'm going to glue the lining to the trays. The original linings were held on with shellac. That won't work for the new lining because it will soak through. The old velvet had a backing on it almost like what you'd find on a carpet. That made for a good surface for the shellac to bond with. I'm thinking I might just use spray adhesive for the new lining. It shouldn't soak through the fabric. I'll post some pics of the completed project once it's all done.

Looks good! I have used felt with adhesive backing, and the spray adhesive. The felt was more difficult to work with because of the stiffness, but looked nice. The spay adhesive worked good, but the material I used was too thin. Looking forward to more pictures.

BTW - I miss when my kids were that little, it is a special time that goes by very fast.

...and finished! Using spray adhesive made the new lining really easy to install onto the trays.

I've got a nice Canadian Tech coming from the 'bay that will go in this. My version of the pocket edition.
