Plotlines and/or characters that should have been left on the cutting room floor

Two movies that would be considered by many to be enduring classics are Caddyshack and Casino but they both suffer from the a similar flaw. A plotline or character that actually take away from me enjoying either film.

In Caddyshack its Danny's girlfriend Maggie O'Hooligan. For starters she's brutal in the role and possibly the worst forced accent ever filmed but its also that she and the minor plot in which she participates does nothing for the overall story and certainly doesn't bring the funny. And in Casino its Sharon Stone as Ginger McKenna. I'll admit her plotline adds something to the film but she's so utterly hateable I find myself skipping through her scenes.

Now its fine to be hatable but still enjoy the character. Take Skyler White who is IMO very unpleasant and a hypocrite but still adds to the Breaking Bad world.

Anne Heche in Wag the Dog. After deNiro's introduction, she contributes nothing to the movie, story, or plot. At best she's a device for Hoffman and deNiro to expand on the behind the curtain stuff, but mostly she's just there.

They would not have to so much remove the Mr Yonioshi character from Breakfast at Tiffany's, just recast it. Watching Mickey Rooney in this makes me cringe.

Also, big fan of both Peter Falk and Wings of Desire, but I feel Falk's appearance in Wings of Desire just kind of threw things off.

Quentin Tarantino inserting himself into the role of Jimmy in Pulp Fiction. Might as well double up and add SNL alum Julia Sweeney as “The Wolf’s” girlfriend. Come to think of it Maria de Madeiros (Butch’s girlfriend) and her blueberry pancakes round out this trifecta of miscast misfits. I see a possible thread emerging.

But MDM is so cute.

Re caddyshack, I believe the movie is set up as an homage to the Marx Brothers. Their movies always had a central story, a boy and a girl, that were absolutely disposable, merely a framework to allow the Marx madness to happen.
