Please recommend a good brush for my bro...

I've finally managed to bring my brother-in-law over to the darkside! He wants my recommendation for a good starting brush. He wants badger, but would like to keep the cost fairly low (between $35 and $50).

Any thoughts?

Get one of our craftsmen to make him a custom handle with a TGN 24mm short loft silvertip in it. I think that for the money it's the best knot available.

Seems a little involved for a "Starter brush"...

I'd recommend an Ewdin Jagger Medium Best Badger Brush or maybe even a Rooney 3/1 in Pure... Maybe even try a Simpsons Commodore X2!

I'm with Ian. TGN knots are excellent for the price. He will get the equivelant of a $100.00 brush for his budget.

I've got to say that my $15 tweezerman has done me pretty darn well. Plus if he gets a couple months in and gives up you/he are not "out" $35-50.

Agreed... I think a custom brush is not a good way to go for someone just starting out. Who knows what his preferences will turn out to be.

Crabtree and Evelyn Best Badger Brush. Can't go wrong with this brush. Cost is around 35 dollars, but performs as well as brushes costing 100. If you can't find it at C and E, you can get the same brush from Duluth Trading Company.

I'll second the recommendation to fire off an email to Rudy...he's a great guy to deal with! And you'll have a one of a kind brush made to your specs and priced very reasonably to boot!

I'd second one of the smaller Simpson brushes, like a Commodore X1. It has a great handle, and even though it costs a little more, I think it's a better brush than a Tweezerman or Edwin Jagger. It would also be easier to sell a Simpson if he decides he doesn't like it.
