Please Reccommend a Cream for Me!

For the last year I've been using soaps, primarily, but I've come to the conclusion that I just don't have the time or patience to whip up a good lather with them, so I'd like to give some more shaving creams a try. To be honest, scent is the most important element for me, though I've found that my skin really seems to like tallow. I'm not too fond of most florals (including lavender) or almond scents. I can't stand heavily "aquatic" scents, like are so popular in many modern fragrances. (Any body-wash with names like "icy blast" or "cool sport" makes me retch.) I tend to like sweet, and/or musky, and spicy, as well as mildly woody or citrus fragrances. Amber, pipe tobacco, and vanilla scents tend to be favorites. Unfortunately, my skin can't handle menthol, so that's going to eliminate a number of creams right there.

Some soaps I've really enjoyed:

Irisch Moos
GFT Eucris
Col. Conk Amber
C&E Sienna
Several Mamma Bear's including:
Indian Tobacco Flower
Cocoa
Bonsai
Celestial Waters
Aromatic Pipe Tobacco
Basil & Lime
Ye Olde Barbershoppe

I also love T&H's Trafalger cream
Irisch Moos cream is nice, though I find it a bit strong straight out of the tube. I like the soap better.

I will have died and gone to heaven if I could find a cream that smelled like Ye Olde Barbershoppe. :biggrin1:

So... Considering all that, what cream should I try next? Anybody willing to sell/trade samples?

I'd recommend the QCS Tub Creams, especially the Old Spice type; http://www.queencharlottesoaps.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=166
I also enjoyed the Basilica, Cordovan, Provence and Cedarwood-Lemongrass.

From the QCS Website:
Shaving Cream
Here at Queen Charlotte Soaps, we make our shaving cream the old fashioned way in small batches. You will not find any of our shaving cream in a spray bottle or in a can! Each tub contains five ounces of shaving cream.

Our shaving cream contains tallow and palm oil for a creamy lather, olive oil for skin conditioning, and coconut oil for a rich lather. We add natural glycerin and aloe vera extract for their moisturizing properties, kaolin clay for a slick, comfortable shave, and natural vitamin E for its nourishing antioxidant properties.

To scent our shaving soap, we use natural essential oils and absolutes, except for Green Irish Tweed Type and Old Spice Type, which are scented with fragrance oil. We do not add colorants. Our shaving cream is 100% formaldehyde- and paraben-free.

Our shaving cream is a hard, dense shaving cream best used with a shaving brush. Any shaving brush will work. For best results, use the "twist-and-swirl" method.

have u tried the proraso sandalwood? I enjoy it. Makes a nice lather when face lathering.
I mainly use a dab of arko cream dropped in a tupperware that I keep my arko stick in. pick up some soap with the cream... a rich combo at $4 for both products.

I recommend Proraso, just because it is a classic around here! If you can't find it locally, then look for the C.O. Bigelow brand, it's the exact same thing basically. I've never tried the Proraso Sandalwood

GFT Eucris is a wonderful cream. So is the new DRH Windsor cream which I just started using. Another great inexpensive cream that fits you scents desciption is The Real Shaving Co. Also, try the EJ/Muehle See Buckthorn and Sandalwood.

The only cream I have used is Proraso but I only have great things to say about it. For the price and availability it is a good start. I got mine for five bucks at Bath and Body

Thanks to all who have answered so far. Keep those suggestions coming!

I'm seeing a lot of suggestions for Sandalwood. Sandalwood is O.K., but not my favorite. I'm afraid I was not clear; When I said "woody" I was thinking more as an under-note, not as the primary scent. Are any of these Sandalwoods more complex than I might expect?

I have been looking at the Windsor and the Buckthorn. I'm glad to see that Eucris is available in a cream now. (Last time I looked, several months ago, it was only available as a soap.) I'll have to take a look at The Real Shaving Co. I had never heard of them until now. Thanks!

They look promising. Sample pack ordered.

Am I remembering correctly that the standard Proraso has menthol in it?

I cant recommend the proraso red highly enough! The scent is true sandalwood and the shea butter really stands out in the performance. The lather and performance are superb, and hold up just as well to the high end brands

GFT by Geo F Trumper, nice spicy citrus
Cyril Salter Sandalwood
Cyril Salter Vetiver (if you like vetiver earthy scents - people love or hate this one)

I have to recommend any of the Salter creams. They are softer than most so just dipping the tips or a quick swirl picks up enough product for a fast face lather. And performance-wise Salter creams are one of the best. I've had 4 tubs of Salter and the only difference is scent.

Salter Wild Rose - a different scent than the flower or TOBS. My daughter called it a Tea Rose.
Salter Sublime Citrus - a citrus/grapefruit scent
Salter Fresh Mint - a mint chocolate chip ice cream scent
Salter Indian Sandalwood - a sweet spicy scent. The best performing sandalwood cream I've tried, but my least favorite sandalwood scent.

TOBS SW +1 ... not a true sandalwood (as many point out), but a real masculine barbershop scent.
Proraso Red +1 ... just all-around goodness
DrH Arlington (or Windsor, or Marlborough) +1 ... DrH rocks! Great performance and great scents.
T&H Grafton +1 ... spicy and nice

They provide a nice description of the scents with each cream.

From your post above, I understand sandalwood may not be your favorite scent, but the Proraso Red is a very nice cream. I like it better than the green- yes, I understand this is heresy, but I just want to be honest :biggrin1:.

I think you should check out samples of TOBS (i think I got mine at shoebox shave shop). Between Eton, Mr. Taylor, Jermyn St and St James I think you'll find something you like.
