Please help in finding my lady a real wool pea coat

Hey Guys, I am looking to get a real wool pea coat for my wife this Christmas and I was just wondering if there is some brand that I do not know about yet in great wool pea coats.

I would like to get her a timeless classic and something that will last many years! I have seen many cheap blend jackets and they look like they wont last more than a few years. Budget is under $400; she never treats herself to anything nice.
I was thinking something like this but possibly even longer

Well what do you think guys?

Try J. Crew...they specialize in "timeless classic". Plus, many of their styles are offered with and without Thinsulate.

I have a wool topcoat from them, and it is perfect in every way. It is warm, durable and infinitely classy.

There are tons of US Navy Military Issue 100% wool pea coats for sale on eBay for way less than your budget.
These tend to hold up better than the civilian copies made by various manufacturers.

+1
I still have mine that I got issued many years ago - I also have the one my dad was issued in 1959 and it looks really good. I suggest looking for one. The only problem I have ever had with mine is I think it keeps shrinking, doesn't fit me like it once did .... :001_smile

I think you've gotten some great advice about the naval surplus versions. If you're more inclined to get a civilian version though, I woulc echo Bearded Buceye's comments. I picked up a JCrew topcoat on ebay a few weeks back and it's a thing of beauty. It's warm and appears durable with a nice, flattering cut. You can probably pick one up for less than half your budget on ebay

Hey enough... enough! Nah just kidding. I knew that I would find what I need by asking here...

Thanks very much guys for the advice, I have looked into all suggestions so far and I really like the Schott jacket suggested by NJBob but my wifes size is not in stock. I will have to stealthily double check some jackets sizing at my place tonight before I move further by emailing the merchant!

Ebay is also promising, and I think my wife would really like the colors of the talbot one...

Decisions, decisions... with these suggestions I will investigate; if anybody thinks of anything else please let me know.

Alpha industries are worth a look. My Mrs has her eye on one.

If you do, search for discount codes, esp over Thanksgiving.

I think that buying your wife a Pea Coat is a terrific idea.

I recommend Johnson Woolen Mills, in Johnson Vermont. We have been to there factory store twice now and the lady of the house has a heavy-weight, 100% wool pea coats that is fantastic.

This is a small town manufacturer that's the real deal. They have a rather primitive web site, but don't let that fool you, their wool products are fantastic.

They have five different offerings.

I have a heavier weight Schott pea coat and don't regret the purchase. One Ontarian to another, to add still more warmth, I sometimes wear a down vest underneath if I'm going to be outside for a while, especially if I'm standing still. Helped keep me warm during a chilly Remembrance Day service this year.

Schott makes the best in the world as far as I am concerned...and they have REAL pea coats made of Melton Wool. If your looking for a coat for the lady that is both refined AND well made AND in America Schott is a company to seriously consider...yes I am an owner and am more than sold on their high quality and customer service. The coat is super warm, comfortable and fits very well and the construction will last a life time. My 740L is the very best coat I have ever owned, so I holler for them when I see an opportunity lol. Simply the best I know of, Schott is bottom line for me. Good luck in your choice, I am sure your lady will be most pleased what ever your choice.

I still have mine from 1975 ... Although it was the genuine article, I remember it as being stiff and bulky, and provided almost no warmth. The wind used to get in every available opening. I never wore it except as needed for inspections.

My peacoat (and later my issue Bridge coat) were the warmest coats I ever had, beating the fluffy Michelin man marshmallow coats hands down.
But - as in all things YMMV

I'll add L.L. Bean to the list. I've owned one for three years now, and it's everything I'd want from a Peacoat; it's the real deal. I can only assume that the ladies' version is just as nice. Also, I have to chuckle at Peacoat recommendations from Texas...no offense to those fine folks, but my sister lives in Dallas and recently posted a pic proclaiming how awesome it was to be wearing flip-flops in November.:biggrin1:
