Plating question

If I had a nickel plated razor, could it be silver plated as is or would the nickel have to be removed?

You can plate right over the nickel
Nickel is used as the base coat when plating copper based alloys like brase with chrome or precious metals.
The reason the gold plating doesn't hold up on the Gillette NEWs is because they weren't nickel plated 1st.

CCB, are you doing the plating yourself or sending them out? 'Cause you know, rhodium plating is just a bottle away. :)

I believe Bob doesn't do any plating. Only has someone do nickel plating for his creations.

It's not too tough to put together a electroplating rig. And it's really easy to do. I used to do some plating at a jewelry store I worked at. I had rhodium plated case keys, and 18k gold plated house keys. :thumbup1: Shiniest keys of anyone I knew.

I recently started using my fathers Gillette "New" open comb, ball tech razor. I am getting very good shaves from it. It has the original gold finish, and looks great, however the coating on the top cap came off. I took it into a local plating company and he told me he would polish and chrome finish the razor for $40.00. I thought that was to much money. I started thinking about trying to refinish it myself. I would not mind spending $10 to $20 to get it replated, but that may not be attainable. I liked the New so much that I purchase another New and two Techs. The New has the heavy handle and also needs to be replated. What would it cost me to set up with a modest good quality plating. Can anyone steer me in the right direction?
