plating issue question

Hi everyone,

Got a plating question for my president. I seem to have 2 plating issues with the razor. One is on one of the doors and the other is close to the head. I just wanted to know will this become a problem and should i send it in to be replated ?

Don't replate a razor, unless it has a lot more plating loss than that, especially not a relatively rare vintage piece. Honestly, there isn't much issue shaving with them, since they are brass under the plating, but yours looks so nice that I'd say that you might want to get a more dinged up one for use and keep that on the shelf.

+1. I agree. However.........if you decide to replate, a good plater will buff out that area to even out the surface. Some platers chemically strip the razor before adding new plating. Others don't. If you're going to go for rhodium some platers buff out surfaces and redo it on top of old surface while others chemically strip, plate in gold, silver, or nickel to allow the rhodium to have a fresh surface to stick on.

I'm all for replating! I like to have something that is old, but looks new. Sorry to say I disagree with the gents above :001_smile. I say go for it. Ask the guys before hand how they would handle those "problem" areas.

That razor just isn't nearly "gone" enough in the plating department to need it. Most razors that are candidates for a replating are good functioning and not too worn razors that have simply been improperly stored, rotting the plating off of them and exposing brass. Well cared for, that razor could be used daily for a lifetime just the way it is.

I think you should use that razor (put it in your rotation if you have the RAD), care for it after doing so (dry it) and be happy with it the way it is. If it loses a lot more plating, go for a replate in 20 years or so. Give it a shot of RemOil when you aren't using it for long periods to prevent oxidation. If you do decide to have it replated, those areas will not be an issue at all.

Very informative thread! So the bottom line is ask how the plating prep will be done, and if they don't do any, make sure it is done right yourself. Correct?
As always it is nice to have such a great community with experience to draw from here!

Yup. I have a small batch getting done in nickel and I'm curious to see how it turns out. I spent more time on buffing the surfaces a little better. The real pros (Reliable Electroplating, Otonoman, Dave at OCrazors) have a lot more experience not only in the quality of their prep work but the precious metals that they use (rhodium, gold, silver, etc.). There's a lot of variables to consider and it's a bit of a craft.

Thanks guys for the replys. So on the handle did the plating chip away and the black spots are the brass? also on the door is that what is called pitting?

Have you tried to clean the razor? If the plating is been chipped down to the brass, brass should appear like a bronze color. It may have only chipped partially and if it didn't go down to the metal it's a good sign because it would be easier to buff and even out. The spots on the door looks like it was just banged up. Pitting looks like flea bites under the plating on the metal. If you look closely on the Hulk you can see tiny pitting spots after it's been cleaned: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showth...-Green-hulk-Fatboy-It-s-out-of-ICU?highlight=

Black spots on handle look like old soap scum to me, had that all over a razor I just got, in some spots looked like minor surface rust too, I dont know what the long term effects are but i hit it with some brake clean, as i work for a shop at a dealership and it cleaned right up

Thanks, i took a new 3d spin tooth brush head and with dish soap i quickly tried to rub it out last night but it didnt go away. ill try again maybe with another technique. Maybe drop some mineral oil on it ?

woohoo im happy to report that those black marks on the handle are now gone thanks to scrubbing bubbles and a tooth brush. The marks on the door are still there tho hehe. But im very happy with the results of the scrubbing bubbles.
