Pipes

I have recently had this urge to try a pipe (thank you B&B ). I did a little searching here and from what I read, a Missouri Meerschaum corncob pipe is the way to go for beginners. What I did not see was which tobacco to try. I do not want to purchase a tin, not knowing if I will like it and knowing that no one I know smokes pipes. Will the local cigar shops have a sampler or something? Also, how do you pronounce "Meerschaum"? I am guessing it is "M-ä-r sh-ow-m", the way it would be said in German.

Well, thank you again B&B for getting me interesting in something

Should these local cigar shops have these pipes and stuff?

EDIT: How many ounces do you usually use for a smoke?

Sure, and like DustinL pointed out in another thread today, Walgreens carries some inexpensive pipes as well.

An ounce of tobacco usually gives me at least ten to twenty smokes, depending on which pipes I use or how full I pack it. It's a very inexpensive hobby compared to cigars, unless you start getting into thousand dollar pipe territory.

Wow, this is inexpensive. Thanks.

Great advice and I'll just toss into the hat that, yes Matt, Meerschaum does use the German pronunciation. It is after all a German word translating into "sea foam," but I'm sure you already knew that.

Check this site out as well

basically when I order tobacco I do them in bulks (usually 2oz.) shouldn't run for more than 5-7 dollars depending on the brand. As far as pipes go I have two kaywoodies which are great and a charatan English estate. Happy smoking.

If you're going to go with English ("unflavored") blends and Aromatic (aka flavored) you might want to get 2 cheap pipes. Also, pick up pipe cleaners and a pipe tool (like a dollar or 2), it'll help you keep the pipe working well and help you pack it, etc. Check out http://www.tobaccoreviews.com for reviews of different tobaccos. Check out a couple of other places to get advice on packing the pipe, cleaning it, etc.

I hit TAD pretty bad most of which I'm saving. I have a can of Mclellands Xmas cheer '06 and '07 and I'm saving the 06 for awhile. If anyone likes aromatics I highly recommend Dans Tobacco.

ooh pipes ... now we're talking! A friend sent me some peterson baccy ... really great stuff. Kaywoodie's are good inexpensive pipes ... look at ebay for some estate lots for cheap, its a good way to start the briar collection.

I got a corncob pipe, a pipe tool, and a blend called "Very Cherry". The pipe did not stay lit more than a minute and the tobacco tasted like an ash tray.

Ack, don't tell me that! I want it to taste like it smells. Pipes are the only tobacco I've ever been remotely interested in trying, all because of the smell.

Don't mean to hijack Matthew's thread. But after reading the two parallel pipe smoking threads here, and watching Pineapple Express a couple of days ago, I'm thinking about getting a pipe. Stopped by Walgreens yesterday and they had a cool looking Dr. Grabow for about $20. Are these any good?

Pipe snob.
