Pipe suggestions

I commend you efforts. My tastes are to off the norm for them so I didn't go there. I enjoy Prince Albert and use a Vauen filter in most of my smokers. I have tried a lot of fine tobacco. Vermont Pipeworks Royal Scot is one of my oddball delights. I'm not their type of reviewer.

Clearly if you fancy the National Joy Smoke (PA) you're of to a great start. Cornell and Diehl has several very good codger burlies as well. Probably my favorite pipe tobacco on the market today is Old Joe Krantz from Cornell and Diehl. Very full, very spicy, a bit on the cigary side but the closest thing to a perfect pipe tobacco on the market today. Other great C&D blends include Epiphany (Burley with a touch of latakia). This one is supposed to be a pretty accurate remake of Revelation (not that abortion that House of Windsor made, the original version that Albert Einstein smoked). This is great stuff. Riverboat Gambler is my out of the norm tobacco of choice. It contains burley, turkish, perique and several other spice tobaccos and is very reminiscent of a burlified oriental or very mild English blend.

I'm going to order some C&D Epiphany. Thanks:001_tt1:

Ok, procured the "Missouri Meershaum" today, along with an ounce of something the tobacco store called "Golden Light" and an ounce of "English Medium."
First smoke was alright. A little "bite," which I understand will disappear as I learn to fill the pipe up properly, and as it breaks in.
Follow-up question: Why was it tough to keep lit? I went through five or six matches over the course of the smoke, and at the end still had a little unburned tobacco left. Not packing tightly enough, or something else?

Don't sweat it, this is normal.

Q: How many times do I have to light my pipe.

A: As many as it takes.

:wink:

JohnYaddy;

Please refer to my first reply:biggrin:. Now you know what I was talking about:rolleyes:. It has a lot to do with tamping and the type of tobacco. Its cut and mosture content. Here's an off used Tip:

1) Fill your pipe to the top loose. Tamp down with A Little Childs Hand. (very lignt.
2) Fill your pipe again loose. Tamp down with a Little Ladys Hand. (lightly)
3) Fill your pipe again loose. Tamp down with a Man's hand. (firm)

A word on Aromatics. If a pipe tobacco smells in the pouch like Mom's baking some cookies it will taste plain and burn your tonge. It will have a fine room note:w00t:.
If it smells like cigars in the pouch it will taste really good, Like a really good cigar does to a cigar smoker. It will not have a nice room note. We call this wife baine:w00t:. This rule has few exceptions.

Keep working at it; it will take about a month :w00t:, but it will be worth it..

I am by no means a good at smoking a pipe. For all of my trouble I would rather sit and smoke a cigar. But I have decided to get better at it. I stopped in at a tobacco shop that specializes in pipes (all I wanted was some fresh tobacco) and ended up getting 2 new pipes, (1 briar, and one cob) 2 tins of Davidoff for $4 each and a package of Mac Baren Original

I smoked the Mac Baren in the Cob, smoked 1/4 bowl of Davidoff Blue in the new Briar, and a full bowl of Altadis Night Cap in my 3 year old Parker. I used the sprinkle and tap method in the cob and had to relight 8 or so times and most of the time the smoke was light and wispy. In the Parker I used the Frank method to pack the bowl and smoked it half way through before having to relight.

Just encase some of you are interested Altadis has a free sampler pack I signed up for this 3 years ago and literally got a lifetime supply of tobacco, 21 pouches of their blends. I know now it's like 3 or 4 packages but it's still free if anyone wants it.

Don't expect to get it anytime soon I know mine took months to arrive.

Yes sir Commander Quan;

Pipe smoking is more of a ritural. The selection of a pipe. The choice of tobacco. The packing, tamping and lighting. The relighting. Slow smoking. Then its keeping a seven pipe rotation dry and clean:ohmy:. Your right, cigars are easy. However when I'm done with my pipe I still have a work of art in my hand not just a butt of a $10.00 stick and a pile of ash:biggrin:.I do enjoy a fine cigar and my hats off to those who love them.

Generally, if your pipe keeps going out, you've packed the tobacco too tightly. Run a toothpick or poker of a pipe tool down the bowl at the 6 o'clock position (as you're looking down at the bowl with the bit facing you.) This will create a bit more circulation near the draw hole.

The Child, Woman, Man method (aka the three bears method) works like a champ. It seems like a lot of stuff to learn at first but before long you do it without thinking and it's just good (sorta like wetshaving actually)

Hey JY
Welcome to the wonderful world of pipe-tobacco! Filling and maintaining a bowl is a bit of an art, it has to be said. I started smoking a pipe over 20 years ago and looking back on it, before the internet, I was really very ignorant and unskilled (not that I'm "skilled" now!). A lot of aromatic or badly-prepared tobaccos show their lack of quality in the way they smoke, but undoubtedly you will have a lot to learn also. Every time this question comes up I recommend the Francks Method of Pipe-filling- its just brilliant. Tobaccoreviews.com is great too and allows you to know exactly what you're smoking, even if you disagree with the opinions of the reviewers. There's a lot of buying into this idea that you light a pipe with a deft action and for the next 2hrs you simply stand looking majestic on your porch; forget about that. I am a finnicky bugger and get great pleasure from interacting with the tobacco, especially if I've simply doubled-over a flake and popped it in the bowl. This can be an ongoing husbanding process but results in much richer flavour and bigger nicotine hit. The Francks Method, however, does allow you to light and relax and rarely needs a relight.
