Pipe Carving

Does anyone carve their own pipes? I saw a starter kit on one of the frequent sites most of us visit and started thinking.... Anyone interested in starting an annual or biannual B&B BL pipe carving contest. Pride being the reward. I guess it would be a lot like the gold dollar straight razor contest. We could record our progress, successes, and failures. Then at the end allow people to vote on them. Let's hear your thoughts. Or :thumbdown

Wow! I like the idea!! For me personally I wouldn't know where to start, but I guess there is always you tube....

That could be an option. May be the cheapest way to proceed.

you in Slash.... I could only imagine what your creative abilities would produce!

I want to carve a pipe either way, but I like the contest idea. Starting with a kit, or reworking an old pipe.. either option sounds good. Or, maybe that's our first two contests already queued up.

Does this count? I made this bowl in a primitive skills class many years ago.

Nice work! Have you smoked from it? (It looks a little clean..)

Once. The pipe has great spiritual meaning to me so its not an everyday pipe. The original stem was cedar but it did not survive a move some years back.

Pipe carving seems really hard. Getting the dimension right on a billiard, with everything coming out even and looking right...yikes! Sounds like it would take a lot of practice.

That being said I'd be in for a refurb/reworked pipe contest!

It is hard :) who says you have to do a Billiard (one of the hardest shapes to get right, and one of the most boring IMO) you could always do a freehand.

I'm game. I'd recommend a starter kit with the tennon already flushed, this is extremely difficult without a lathe or specialty tools.

This sounds pretty good, I hsd been yhinking about trying it myself. I have no tools to speak of but it would still be nteresting.

*Has, *thinking, *interesting. Stupid fat fingers on little android keyboard.
