Pinaud "Special Reserve" Not a "Reserved" Scent!

I tend to try and like most things old-school and vintage. After perusing some older threads about Special Reserve and being intrigues by the descriptions I had to try it. I can't find such magic elixirs locally at any B&M so off to Amazon I went. I had an order in my cart and added the SR for $6.50. It arrived yesterday and I had to try it right then.

OK, this stuff comes on strong, no doubt! After a few minutes I started picking up some of the scent descriptions. I have to agree with those who say that Special Reserve is complex. It seems to have distinct base, middle, and top notes (whatever that all means). Previous reviewers describe it as:

Bold, manly/masculine, smoky, woodsy, spicy, leathery, slightly musky. The more interesting descriptions include "A cross between a leather jacket, new car, Ivory Soap and a touch of Cinnamon" or "A freshly oiled baseball glove or well-work armchair". I like how some describe it as "what John Wayne's house would smell like". And when describing the "leather" scent, some say don't think high-end leather jackets but think leather tack, work gloves, or a chair at the gentlemen's club... leather, whisky, cigar smoke! The fragrance experts say the notes are: top-citrusy, middle-leather & tobacco, base-spice and smoke. (I'm guessing SR could be a home remedy for "Low Testosterone)

So, whatever it is, I like it. It kind of pairs really well with Tabac. I was wondering what the LOTH would think so I went light and asked her what she thought. She actually liked it and said she gets mostly a powdery smell.

Well, my initial opinion is that SR is a nice fall/winter scent but maybe not for everyday, around the office use. I'm thinking this stuff is best used after cleaning up and going out after a day of hunting or chopping wood. Maybe for guys night out when there is a little sipping of the brown stuff. whatever it is I can imagine the fragrance is the epitome of YMMV and likely polarizing. Special Reserve is definitely NOT "Reserved"!

Any other 'Special Reservists" out there? Post your impressions.

special reserve is one of the aftershaves I travel with when I am going to be gone an extended period of time.

The other is classic Clubman. I never grow tired of either of those scents no matter how long I use them.

Yes, it is very strong, and I do like it on occasion when the weather is cool/ cold out. You cannot apply like most a/s, just splashing it on- waaay too strong. I found that a mix of 2 parts SR to 1 part Witch Hazel works well to tone it down some. It does change somewhat when thinning it out, but keeps you from being "THAT GUY".

I should have mentioned that SR now joins it's more civilized cousins and denmates...original Clubman, Lilac Vegetal, and Virgin Island Bay Rum.

HEY! I just noticed that the mods have changed my handle to Foreman of the Bucking Badger Ranch. I gotta think that such a ranch foreman would be rocking the Special Reserve!

I love the Special Reserve. Has all day staying power...but then again, what would you expect. I agree it may not be the best for the office, but I will be wearing it tomorrow to our chili cook-out/bonfire. Perfect for that.

I was wearing it today. Great stuff! I think it projects less than it seems to when you are wearing it. SWMBO said she wasn't getting much from it, even in the car.

I just got a bottle this week and tried it twice. It seems ok but I like the original better. I also noticed that the liquid in my bottle of SR is very dark, so much so you can't read the back side of the front label. Is it supposed to be that dark? It definitely does not look like your picture.

Hmmmm. Mine is darker than the picture, but not so opaque that I can't read the back of the label...of course, it's a half empty bottle.

I'd describe it as a combination of linseed oil rubbed walnut, well-worn leather sling, whiskey and cigar smoke, with just a hint of debauchery and terminal ballistics.

LMAO!!! Great description. :biggrin1:

It would be a great work-day aftershave if you worked at a lumberyard, ran a cigar store, or skippered a tugboat. As I am an accountant, I save it for the weekends.
