What's new

Pils,Joris or Feather SS ?

I want to pull the trigger on a " High End" DE but don't know which one?

Ive read the reviews and am still unsure.I know the Pils is more than the other two and that the Joris has an aggressive head compared to the feather which is described as " Smooth". I'm not sure of the Pils.

I have a job where i have to be clean shaven and have to shave daily. I also shave my head every three days and prefer an aggressive shave ie: slant, long comb new over the 89L because of being rushed for time in the morning i'd prefer not to have to make more than two passes.

So do you think the Feather would more suit me or one of the other two??

Thanks, for your Help.... Steve

If I had to shave daily, I'd be looking for a 'smoother' and 'less aggressive' razor because you face will have less time to heal between shaves.

The pils is a better shaver but it, for me at least, requires more maintenance than the Feather. No razor is flawless but search on both the feather and pils to see a sample of issues.

My recommendation is to hold off on either if you want aggressive.

Thanks guys. It's not that I'm insistent on " aggressive" it's just that I don't want to spend a ton of money and be disappointed on a razor that takes 4 passes for a BBS

I havent used any of the three, but if I had the cash to blow I would try a feather. I just love the look of it.

What razors do you currently own and what do you like/dislike about them.

FYI, you don't need to spend near what any of these razors cost to get a good shave and, judging by the number of these you see in the BST (in particular the Feather and the Pils) lots of guys aren't enamored with these.

Agreed.. That's why I'm trigger shy. Ive tried alot of DE's going thru my RAD stage and have come to own only the ones I really like.. Ive got a BM New , a 89l, slant, Big Fellow and just sold a president and possibly a #77.
I Like the aggressiveness of the New's but only on my first day back to work from two days off. The 89l is good also

I think I have seen 3 (maybe 4, alright maybe 5) Feathers on the B/S/T since May and if memory serves one bought a replacement for the one he sold and another bought one and was gifted one. I think i have seen 1 Pils there also. I don't know but that doesn't seem like a lot to me...

IMO nothing feels like the feather AS in hand that I have tried, but I have only tried only a EJ89, feather portable, and a new deluxe (plus the AS)... not a lot and none of the finishes feel the same way on the skin... but is it worth ~$150... debatable, but the whole wetshave experience to me seems to be the value of enjoyment of the process, not just the end result... that said, i just spent that much on an ice cream maker... and i think the feather was a better purchase.

I've been saving up for a new FeatherAS, from reading all the reviews it seems like a great razor. What I got from all the commentary was that it's so well made its easy to mistake its quiet and smooth glide with mildness. Of course I haven't tried it because I spent my money on buying your President Steve!!! But next up at some point is the feather... That is if I don't luckily stumble into a Brit Aristocrat....!

I believe that the Joris uses the old Muhle R89 head. I bought an R89 from Fendrihan. It's nice and aggressive and I usually run it on a bulldog handle from cooncat bob. A rather different razor for about $75.

According to Joris, they make the head in house, but I am inclined to believe (like others) the head is actually made by the same Italian firm that made the head on the Muhle. The Bulldog handle is a nice option.

I have owned both the Joris and Pils. The Joris, as you are aware, is quite aggressive, whereas the Pils I found to be a bit smoother and more forgiving. I needed 3-1/2 passes to get a BBS shave from the Pils, but only two passes or so from the Joris. After a week with the Joris, I sold the Pils. Now that I'm used to it, I can get a BBS shave almost every day with only the occasional nick. The handle, BTW, is really nice to shave with and the fit and finish of the razor is very nice.

Hope this helps.

All of the razors you mentioned are gorgeous - but I am inclined to agree with Suzuki; Get a gold plated HD slant. I have one of these with a Feather blade. The slant (IMHO) provides a very smooth and close shave with it's slicing action. I just don't think a $100+ DE razor is cost effective.

I have attached a photo of my favorite combination.

If you would consider an injector I would suggest the CS Cobra. I see that they are back in stock. It appears the price has gone up though. They rarely show up on BST.

I second the Cobra Classic as a great, aggressive, but super-smooth shaver. The extra-wide head may not agree with everyone, though.

One caveat though: I haven't used the razors you mentioned, so it's conceivable that they could be better than the CC.

I have the Pils and the Feather SS.

I've used both now for several months.

I like the Feather because it is very smooth as others have said. It feels like it's not aggressive yet at the end it works incredibly well.

That said my favorite is the Pils. I like the fit/finish better and the extra weight. I also believe that I get a closer shave with the Pils. I do have to be more careful with the Pils. The feather seems like I can put any pressure I want on it. I can easily cut myself with the Pils.

I alternate occasionally however 90% of the time I use the Pils.

note I use feather blades in both and I have a fairly heavy beard where I need to shave everyday.

Good luck I don't think you can go wrong with those choices!

that's how i feel about the Feather AS, it's just waiting for me to let my guard down so as to slice my face as compared to my other razors... I haven't tried the Pils yet as I was distracted by straights.

Good luck I don't think you can go wrong with those choices!

I agree!
