Wow, that's a terrific den!

Would you do me a favor if you have the time? I am building a pipe rack on Sunday with a neighbor, and if you could take a couple quick measurements with a ruler, I would be very grateful. A plain old plastic ruler is fine, no micrometer measurements needed here.

  1. The diameter of the holes the stems fit in?
  2. The vertical distance between the second and third tiers (specify inside dimension or top to top)?
  3. The distance between centers of the stem holes?

I have a simple design I will use already, but I need to do an accurate layout. If you are too busy, no worries, but those three things would be most helpful to me and I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Love that den!!

thanks!!! and sure thing! would be happy to help!!!

if I were to make the 3 tier rack custom I'd add a bit more space between each tier. tough to get large bents in/out, larger danish style freehands are verbotten and even some of my looong stem pipes (Canadians, Lovats etc) have no chance of fitting except on the top rack.

I'll post dimensions here instead of PM in case anyone else is interested :)

I am actually only doing a 2-tier, 7 pipes per tier this time. It won't be anything fancy, but it should be functional. I have 'adult supervision' with the neighbor overseeing the operation.

Mountaintop is a pretty area. I live near Valley Forge. Well, my family does, I work in suburban Chicago. Going home tomorrow for a week, though! :)

1. 1 inch
2. 3 1/2 inches (from bottom of top shelf to top of 2nd shelf (and same from 2nd to 3rd)
3. 1 1/2 inch

I would consider making each just a bit large - even 1/4-1/2 inches would make a huge, HUGE difference (i'd be able to fit many more of the collection on that rack)

ESPECIALLY so with # 3 - I'd definitely go a full 1/2" more from center to center. you'll likely be able to fit a pipe into each spot then!

Hope that helps!! :)

I'd still increase the measurements (especially if you are doing 7 per tier) unless you have a collection of size 2 Dunhills or similar sized pipes :)

and yes, I love it here. Bailed at 17 (like most locals who can) and after a worldy adventure, decided to come back to develop a relationship with the folks at 30... best decision I ever made :) 1 1/2 hrs to Philly, 2 hrs to NYC. and yet I'm 15 minutes to my favorite fishing spot :)

Valley Forge is gorgeous too, and as a history buff I love the entire area... and do some serious fishing on the Schuylkill (farther up past Hamburg)

Hit Valley Creek and the Tulpehocken (speklling?) a few times too. though not in years.

one day we should have a PA gathering :)

Thanks so much! I will increase the spacing, per your advice. I appreciate it very much!

my pleasure!!!! glad to help!!!

def can't wait to see pics when you are done!

FYI, I'm using the leather/wood pipe rack (that is in the last of the pipe den pics) for my straight razors now - it's perfect for em!

Holy Smokes !

Thats a great looking Den, and dont worry as time goes on you should be able to collect more pipes to get you through the day !!! lol

Love it man, thanks for posting these

OK, Please look these over and see if I have expanded things a bit per your suggestion correctly. I am looking for quick and easy, not fancy, I'm not a cabinet maker by any means. I just want a fast project that is functional. Here is a photo of what I am mimicking. I only want a 7x7 pipe, two-tier rack for this time around. No keyholes, just plain old circular holes. Fast and easy.

And here are my plans, hope they make sense?
