Picking the perfect brush

Ok so I used to own a brush. A REAL cheap one that came in a kit of REALLY cheap shaving product. Long story. Anyway, I enjoyed using a brush until it fell apart so much that not only was I shaving to cut the growth on my face, but to also remove an entire badger from my face after applying shaving cream. So that all aside I want to get a REAL shaving brush. I know a lot of you have a brush for every cream and soap and every day of the week but im not that rich yet. I don't want to have to go broke on a brush. I like face lathering and lately, due to lack of brush, just use my hand. I also like the appeal of trying some soaps and currently use EJ cream. I guess what I am looking for is a great badger brush that will last, lather up great, work with soaps, creams and face lathering, but not cost a lot. If possible I would like one under $100. My wife would appreciate it also.

I have been doing a lot of reading and I have been seeing a lot about the Roony 3/1, Simpson Duke 2 Best, Simpson Colonel X2L, and even read the Brush Chronicles and caught a great review on my favorite brand, Edwin Jagger, about their Silver Tip brush which is just a little out of my budget despite how bad I would love to have it. So I ask this. Out of the other listed brushes what would work best as a great all around brush? Maybe none of them, so what brush would you recommend for me that would fit the bill?

Thank you all again for the help

Colonel gets my vote. I have one and I love it. I face lather soaps, but have also used it to bowl lather creams and it's excellent at both.

I'll vote for the Colonel x2l as well. It's very versatile and represents a great value in the Simpsons line up. Mine has softer tips then my Berkeley and is quite stuffed with badger for the $$. Works great for face, bowl lather, soaps, creams whatever.

I am a novice, so I don't have much to compare to but I started with a Van Der Hagen brush and eventually got a Parker 100% Silvertip Badger brush. It is world of difference. I don't know what the more expensive brushes feel and lather like to be able to compare but I can tell you it is a HUGE step up from the dirt cheap ones and it definitely meets my needs! I got mine on Amazon for about 60 bucks.

My current favorites are the Muhle synthetic (silvertip fiber) brushes. They lather extremely well with very little product, they feel wonderful and will last a very long time. They can be had for around $70

Well then Im thinking my first REAL brush might be the Colonel. I was kind of leaning towards this one considering some of the comments I have read. One day I will have that Edwin Jagger silver tip, but since I love sleeping NEXT to my wife in the same bed, I think the Colonel will do quite nicely. :)

Thank you all for the quick replies.

The closest brush to "perfect brush" for me is the most versatile brush. For me, that's my Savile Row 3824 Silvertip Badger. Nice handle length for bowl or face lathering..... nice soft tips and just the right density for both creams and soaps.

Ding Ding Ding....

The 2 band M&F hybrid knot gives it a run for it's money though and is denser and does't splay as much.

SR3824 vs M&F 24/50
