Picked up a 1959 Fatboy E-4

I picked up a 1959 Fatboy E-4 on ebay. Cleaned it up and all mechanics work well. It really is a nice razor - built to last.

For the last 2 years I have been shaving almost exclusively with a Merker 34C, a razor i love.

It has taken me a while to get used to the fatboy. It's a fine shave, and I find it move forgiving then the Merker, but also it seems "vaguer" than the Merker - kind of like driving a large pick up truck after driving a little sports car.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

I have heard others describe the Fatboy as such also. Best analogy I believe is like comparing it to the 50's American cars, bulky but beautiful designs. I think the Slim which is similar in style, but quite "slimmed down" for lack of a better description, is much more agile and easier to handle around the face. Of course some do swear by the Fatboy also, maybe just give yourself some time to get used to it. If it doesn't work out for you I would advise trying the Slim. You wouldn't be dissapointed in the shave.

I just used a fatboy for the first time over the weekend, and my usual goto is a 34c. I had to dial it to 4, anything higher and I couldn't get the pressure level right to not cause irritation. It seems to like a much different angle than the 34c, most likely part of it having a pretty large domed head. All said and done tho, it's a workhorse razor, I think. Very much like the truck to car analogy. I know if I ever ended up with 3 or more days of growth, the fatboy would be my second choice (the first being a straight, so not sure that really even counts? lol).

That is a great analogy - it's like driving a Buick from the 50s - smooth but not very maneuverable.
