Petr's Review of Czech & Speake O&C Shave Soap!

Good evening chaps. Have any of you read Petr's Review of Oxford & Cambridge shave soap? This is VERY interesting to me. His description makes me want to buy this soap NOW! AOS performance with a real lavender scent? Can you hear me say yes!!! Please, will some of you who have tried this please add your opinions? I am on the verge of buying this on total impulse and that is simply unlike me. Talk me down. For goodness sakes at least suggest a plausible excuse to give SWMBO if I cannot help myself.

Regards, Todd

I have this soap. It's everything he says.

I don't think I can talk you down but hey, if you don't like it you can always get rid of it on the b/s/t. As for a plausible excuse??

"...what? No, honey, that's not new. I've had it laying around for months -- I just haven't bothered trying it until now."

How's that??

EDIT: The scent does mellow out after you've used the soap a few times. It doesn't stay that intense indefinitely, and I don't think it's nearly as intensely scented as, say, QED's soaps. But yes, it's fragrant, it's lavender, and it smells amazing.

Todd-You weren't kidding. Great review. I will be within shouting distance of Cambridge Chemists this weekend, and I can feel the pull of O&C and No. 88 already.

I disagree with parts of his review. It's much better than he says, and I don't find it to be just average in terms of being moisturizing. Considering the price of other soaps, I'd give it a better price rating as well. Mentioning Tabac as of superior efficacy was mind boggling (ease of lather isn't the same as efficacy IMO). This soap is vastly superior to Tabac, and I would say that it's the best current production shave soap on the market :thumbup1:

Can I ask what other soaps you mean? I did a quick websearch and this stuff looks to be $36 + shipping for a refill, which would put it near the top of the current soaps price range that I've seen. Is it much cheaper B&M?

It is as good as anything I can come up with.:blushing:

Bob, you lucky dog. I would love to visit that store.

Well if that doesn't seal the deal I don't know what will. Sorry for the pitiful plea for help in resistance. Time to focus soley on the excuses I guess. Man this soap intrigues me.

Considering the price of a Trumpers with a Bowl is $36, I wouldn't give this a 1 out of 10. Penhaligon's English Fern refill is approximately the same, and this is much better than that. I'm not saying it should be a really high score, but it costs what it costs, and it's the best. That means a premium price is justified IMHO. Certainly not a 10, but definitely not a 1 either :001_smile

I see your point, but I would think that you shouldn't consider anything other than cost to use for the price ranking. At ~$100 for the puck with dish and ~$40 for the refills, I'd say a 1 is a fair price score. Pens should score a 1 for price too (or a 2 at best). The difference would be its other scores would be lower (efficacy, lather, etc).

Maybe they should change the price rating to a value rating.

We disagree. How odd :001_rolle

Back to the point, The O&C is a very nice, Italian made, tallow soap. Arguably it's a best of class. There are few its equal. Strangely I despise the C&S Cologne with the same name.

Cambridge offers B&B Members a discount on purchases and if ordered via Mr.A.Graham Bell's device, free shipping.

Happy Shaving!

Reading this thread I was just curious if anyone has figured out a way of getting the little blue dish for this soap? I'm sure it's pricey and all, but I likes the looks of it. :001_smile

I just received the samples of their colognes and I don't like any of them.
But I'm certain I will like the #88 and O&C as a shaving soap.
My wife has to go to London again next month so she will get another £300 shopping list.

Dang it - this is going to be an expensive thread. I've been planning to order a bottle of the O&C cologne, now I'm going to have to add the O&C and 88 Shaving soap to the order. Wearing the 88 today, it's spectacular.

This won't work!

You didn't think I'd actually come back and check this thread AGAIN, did you?

Alright, silence the voice in your head and just give it what it wants. It will only get louder. You can go deaf from the inside if he reaches the critical point.

I never let it go that far. I give in after it asks for only 2-3 times as the voice clearly knows what's good for me.

This is why I will end up with this soap. Pricey, yes. Worth it? Other than simply not liking the scent or whatever, yes. Same with AOS. These soaps last so long it is pennies per shave in a decent rotation. I remember when I bought my Pen's BB soap. Folks thought it was over the top at $25 for a refill cake. I have used it dozens of times and still have over half a cake years later. I only hesitate to buy it now since I already bought stuff last month. And the month before...
