Perfume bottles

I like to watch Antiques Roadshow, and last night someone had several perfume bottles. Several were very fancy and it was interesting to hear the appraiser's (I think it was Nicholas Dawes, one of my favs) comments.

Apparently, many bottles from the early 20th century were created by Lalique (wonder if its the same as the maker of Encre Noir?). All the bottles were valued in the $100's range, including the most ornate ones. The last one he addressed, one of the Lalique bottles, was interesting-looking, but smaller and less fancy than others....but was worth $20-$30K!

I think the woman about had a heart attack!

I wondered if Rene Lalique, the maker of perfume bottles was in the same company that now sells scents. Personally, I could care less about the bottle a scent comes in as long as it does its job. Some folks, though, are really into the bottles.

I once got into an attempted swap with a guy on BN. We went round and round, until he finally broke down and said he wanted bottles "to look good on the shelf". I, on the other hand, would prefer to pay less and avoid wasted money on fancy packaging. It seems perfume bottles are used to help justify over-the-top pricing.

I've seen several vendors in antique malls that sell old perfume bottles, both with product and empty. I haven't even looked at them to see what they sell for. I've only looked for Old Spice bottles. I probably should pay more attention to the others, but my AD's are limited to things I can actually use - so far.

Some folks really go for *vintage* scents. I'd be afraid they were either losing, or had lost, their oomph.
