I recently got a second-hand puck of Penhaligon's English Fern--I've been jonesing for EF since I got Trumper's body wash in their sampler. Anyway, I like it. But there's a weird 'after-scent' that I get, right towards the end of the sniff. If it were the tallow version I would think it's the clay-like scent I get from tallow soaps, but it's the new formulation. Any of you guts get that?

Wow. Must be the reformulation. Bad enough they had to mess w/the shaving formula, but they screwed w/the scent, too? Bad news.

Some times I get just a wiff of a rubber or latex smell from EF soap.

+100. It's amazing. Very disappointing to think that the reformulation may have mucked with that perfection.
Vlad-Pen's has been sending replacements to some folks who had pucks of the new stuff that didn't lather. It may be worth a complaint email re: the off scent to see if they will comp you a new puck.
Its worth the letter of protest to let them know that New Coke never should have been made, since Old Coke was fine, right?
I have experience with old form EF, BB, etc. I have not bought Pen's shaving soap in years, but SMWBO did get me a puck of BB (the newer stuff), and its doing fine.

I don't know Vlad...I've never tried EF, but after your other post about AOS soap stinking that may make you question a few things. Did you get both soaps from the same person? Also, have you had the misses take a whiff?
Then again you like the smell of MWF and it reminds me of old lady.

No, different people. Don't get me wrong, I don't think MWF smells great...it's not Cade or anything. But it's mild and unoffensive. Just run of the mill soap.
Maybe you got a bad soap. I have both the old and the new formulation and they smell identical. Even my wife, who has the better sense for scents, said she cannot detect a difference. There is a difference in the lathering properties, but the new formulation of my EF is not that bad, however, nothing beats the tallow-based old formulation. But the EF is definitely not as bad as the BB I had.
Just trying to get a rise out of ya', I have no room to talk...I like Tabac. When you were smelling it were you smelling it straight out of the bowl or was it while shaving with it?
The reason I ask is because I used Burma Shave soap one time and thought it had this absolutely terrible underlying stench...until I used the same brush with a different soap and realized that I was also using brand new boar brush that had a heavy boar stink.
BTW I'm a fan of sandalwood so if you're looking to get rid of that AOS puck I can PM you my address.

Didn't notice it very much shaving with it, just out of the bowl. And I LOVE the smell of Tabac. I can't understand people who hate it.
