Penhaligon Benheim Bouquet - Tallow vs New Formulation

Everyone seems to be in agreement that the old tallow-based Pen's soaps were much better than the current version. I have a puck of BB but have no idea how old it is. What should I look for to help me determine whether it is the tallow or veggie version?

The tallow version will lather great, and the non-tallow BB will barely make any lather at all. That's the easiest way to tell which one you have.

Can you tell the difference from the color? I've seen pictures of BB shave soap where the soap is blue. Mine is kind of a tan color.

My vintage BB was also a tan color, so I don't think you can tell from the color.

the new blenhiem is blue. the new English fern is green. if youre saying the old pucks are tan you really can tell right?

the reformulated ones have "penhaligon's" imprinted on the soap instead of the soap name

good point. that's a good way too. it doesn't help when the puck's been used. it's the same thing with AOS. the have a new imprint on the non-tallow. will be hard to tell once it's been used.

Great. Does anyone have a similar picture of the BB showing the name and Penhaligon's? I'd sure love to see those two. Also, is the blue BB just a new color for the reformulated BB, or was it changed to blue when it was reformulated. If the latter, then my tan one would be the older version. As someone already mentioned, it's been used a little and all writing is now gone.

Every time I see threads like these I can't believe I sold my old formula Pens!!! Sigh...to have that sale back...

Thanks. That was a bit helpful - only because I don't quite remember what was on the top of mine. I thought maybe seeing a picture would help. Mine is definitely that color though. So if it was changed to blue when it was reformulated, then I've got the old stuff. Still not sure though from these posts whether the change to blue coincided with the new formulation, or whether there were some veggie based, reformulated ones in this color and then as an additional change they went to blue.

Hijacking this thread somewhat (sorry). I have a bar of English Fern- the puck is all white. I bought a year ago or on B/S/T. The seller did not now whether it was the old stuff or not. Never mind- it´s just great which all that matters to me. So people- old formula or new? OR was it possible a mishap in the factory and sold as a "second"? After seeing the green puck pic that Sarimento 1 enclosed I incline to think that this was a mishap that came out wrong and could not be sold in the stores at the times. Reason for me asking- if it´s the new formula - I will buy it again. Within a heartbeat! Tricky question to answer I know- and maybe I should have not spoken out at all.. Oh well..
