I shaved a fortune
I did carpentry work for about 1/3 of my working years. For the last 20 years, I've been using a 3.0mm Caran d'Ache Fixpencil. I used to buy them and the replacement leads from Lee Valley but they no longer carry them.

I found them again on this site and bought a couple...and will give a couple of them to our youngest son. They work better for me than "carpenter pencils"..... I sharpen them in the field with sand paper.. though I have used a utility knife as well.

Stumbled on this and it made me go take some pics of a mechanical pencil I got from an antique store in a razor lot. It extends to a 12 inch ruler and still has lead in it. Currently just sits in a bin in the basement.

Once again, this forum will cost me some money. I saw this thread and I really like the Rotring Rapid Pro pencil, so I just ordered one on Amazon. I have to stay off this forum.
I have a couple Rotring 600 pens, love them. Our son has a pencil. Our other son asked for and got a 600 pen for Christmas, from his brother.

They are solid writing instruments.

Cross mechanical was my go-to for years. I require a very fine line (usually write pretty small) and anything larger than 0.5mm is too big.

Mom liked 0.7mm mechanicals, still have some floating around.

And a Sheaffer from the 60's, and probably a Parker or two.

And I just looked in my "spare" pen cup and found my Dad's four color drafting pencil -- four holder with sliders in a fat pencil, red, green, blue, and black leads. Great fun if I can find some colored leads anymore.
