What's new

PdP: Needs more love! Wow!

Tonight, my den including MWF, Tabac, Cella, AoS tallow, Panna Crema, Mikes, Barrister and Mann, Palmolive and Arko, grew by 1. I could sense the jealousy as the new recruit came up to bat: Pre de Provence. Unlike its tallow brothers, this veggie based soap had something new to offer... a shave better than I've had in months. Could it be? A non tallow... Superior performer!? Expectations were low and initial loading and head lathering didn't boost my confidence. However, what came to follow was incredible. Not a single nick or hint of irritation. When it comes to shaving my neck line, I almost always get some kind of small weeper or nick. Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

Needless to say, my love for shaving soaps intensified. You come to stages in your wetshaving journey where you feel you've experienced most of what the market has to offer. Then a night like tonight occurs.

I love all of you and everything that this forum has to offer. What a great way to end a solid birthday!!

Question - according to my list above, what are some other soaps worth trying? What are some other great performing soaps that aren't higher than $30?

I'm a big fan of this soap as well, it lathers well and is a nice slippery soap. For me its about as a good as anything I've tried.

Here is a great video on the soap (by B&B member KcHighLife), lathering starts at 4:18.

It's all about the quality of my shave - the performance I get out of any given product.

I really don't think last night was a fluke. I usually use Feathers or Polsilver, but decided with an Astra SP. I'm still BBS-DFS 12 hours later.

Very pleased! Can anyone recommend any other fantastic veggie soaps?

I've been hearing good things about LA shaving soaps. I will try it soon but from what I've read it is excellent.

Veggie based and based on MdC recipe.

Happy belated birthday!

Calani is non-tallow and less than $10 shipped directly from Germany if you purchase enough to make shipping worthwhile.

An excellent and not written about enough soap that is in many people's top 5. The scents are amazing and although the pucks are only 65 grams, will last as long as many triple milled soaps.

+1 on Calani soap. Congratulations on your excellent shave! I had a similar experience with another French non-tallow soap last night..... Savon Le Pere Lucien. I had been shaving with Valobra stick (great tallow soap) for the past month straight and had been getting really great shaves, but always with a weeper or two on my neck around my Adam's apple..... and occasionally some irritation. Last night I shaved with Savon Le Pere Lucien for the second night in a row, got the lather dialed in nicely, and had a irritation free and bloodless shave. No tugging whatsoever. The proof of a good soap is in the final results.

DR Harris Lavender (or any) is ultimate as well!

Also, if you like PdP (as much as I do) try Proraso blue - cream (in the tube). Same sort of baby powder smell and FANTASTIC shave!!

Can you compare it to the B&M and Tabac as far as performance? Those two are top notch IMO.

Honestly, just as good. Keep in mind I'm judging after a single use but my shave last night truly was superb. Add some variety to your life and try a veggie soap.

Trust me. I thought tallow soaps were the only way to go as well. I believed the only alternative was glycerin aka Col. Conk and VDH so my opinion was skewed. Can someone more educated tell me about veggie soaps and what they consist of instead of tallow?

To make a long story short, the performance of PdP in my last nights shave was superior to that of Tabac and BM. YMMV as may mine. I will post again and let you know how my next shave is. Last night I got a waaaay closer shave than usual and more comfortable as well. Zero blood or irritation sand I mean zero!

I actually traded my Dr. H Arlington for PdP. I wasn't impressed by its performance compared to Tabac, MWF, etc.

I like PdP as much as Tabac, especially the scent of PdP. When dialed in correctly, I don't see a huge difference in performance between the two.

+1 Calani is in my top 5 as well. It may very well be my favorite soap manufacturer. The scents are very well done, and the lather is very slick. It doesn't explode in lather for me though, but I still get enough for a 2-3 pass shave.

I really thought Tabac was the ultimate performer and nothing could come close. I can honestly say that I like Panna Crema and my single use of PdP more. Better closer shaves.

Thanks for the feedback. PC and PdP are on my short list. We need to make a great soap exchange for samples...I have like 6 or 7 pucks with a ton of samples from Mike's, Stirling, B&M. I just hate buying all these pucks...

agreed. or a group buy for this calani stuff. you know, just to make the shipping from Germany worth it...

or maybe just for an excuse to buy more soap.

I got PdP from a friend and I didn't really care for it. The lather was jus a little lacking in my opinion. Just my opinion. U need to try Institute Karite. A very nice veg and Klar Seifen, also.

L'Occitane Cade is a very good soap that runs around $12.00 for a refill puck. Institut Karite is another soap you should try. Both of these, like PdP, are from France.

I Agree that Klar Seifen is a great veggie soap.
