pc tech.??

having a problem with my audio. speakers are working for certain things, like you tube and other things online.
BUT,,, i dont have a volume control in my lower right of the monitor. and if i play a game, there is no sound either.

opened control panel, went to audio device, and it says there isnt one...:confused1 okay... how do i get one?

if i cant hear the rattle of the mustangs guns or the panzer blow up?? whats the point then?

Are there volume/mute controls within the game itself? Is there any settings, configuration, or profile settings screen within the game? If you hear sound with youtube videos, I would expect the game sounds to work. Unless it is looking for certain sound hardware. Its unclear what HW/SW your system has, though I am no expert on sound drivers or what windows 7/xp is looking for.

You might need to go into the, darn it's been so long since I was on a PC, but it's under "my computer" I think.

It's a tree that displays all your devices like video cards, audio cards, memory, etc. It is there you can see what audio hardware you have and if you need to update or reinstall drivers.

finding the vol control probably won't help. sounds like a directx problem. try reinstalling your sound drivers. if that does not work get the latest dx redist and install it. if you don't know that stuff you will need assistance. i really can't help not being there. the vol control is under hardware, devices, sound.

I'm pretty good with PC problems. What version of Windows are you running? I'll try to help you figure out the problem.

First things first before we start to troubleshoot the problem. What version of Windows are you using? And have you tried rebooting?

Goatee:

Let's start with these two pages from Microsoft:

If you have XP:
How To Display the Volume Icon in the Notification Area in Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279435

Windows 7 (and possibly other versions):
Diagnose and repair sound playback problems automatically
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319095

If you are getting sound for YouTube and other stuff, you definitely have some kind of audio card or motherboard support for audio. So that one message you got via control panel about no audio device was not correct. I have confidence we'll get this to work for you.

was out of town over the weekend. thanks for the responses.. YES i do have sound,, on everything i can think of except games.
the weird thing is, the volume control in the bottom right corner of my monitor is no longer there.
i am running windows xp... i have rebooted,, i assumed the drivers need to be reinstalled. i am just very unfamiliar with this.

nick,
i tried the links you put up. if i open control panel, sounds/audio, my choices are VOLUME, SOUNDS, AUDIO, VOICES, HARDWARE.
under the volume folder it says i have no audio device, under that it has a volume control all the way down, but it is not solid,,,, its like partially transparent and will not allow me to click on it to adjust it.

on the link above, it says to "show volume control on task bar".. i cannot find this option anywhere

did it, but it was already set to automatic. i tried to run it anyway but it would not allow me to click on start. the only button highlighted was "stop".

What games don't have sound? Might be a clue to be found there. Did you have sound in the games before, and now you don't? Or did you never have sound in the games?

Also, can you tell us a bit more about your system? What kind of computer - Dell, HP, no-name from the shop on the corner? Any idea if you have a separate sound card or if it's built in to the motherboard?

Here's some help on figuring out what kind of sound card or audio support you have:

game setting are all good. besides, it would not explain why i have no volume control in my bottom right corner.

To be honest...as a last resort..backup and reinstall...Every few years is a good time frame for non server based desktops to "come back" to life again

Here's something to check:

Go to your C:\Windows\System32 folder

Look for a file called
sndvol32.exe

That's the volume control. If you don't see that file, try this:

Go into your Control Panel and open Folder Options, under the View tab uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)", click Apply/OK. Now go into Windows Explorer(Not Internet Explorer) and go to C:\Windows\System32\dllcache folder and open it. Locate the sndvol32.exe file right click it,choose copy. Next go to the C:\Windows\System32 folder and open it. In the right pane right click an empty area and choose Paste. Now you should have your volume icon back.

I'm not still running XP, but if you can't find the file and it's not in your dllcache folder, let me know and I'll see if I can find a copy for you.
